EUREKA!

The past few weeks have been incredibly busy and exciting, highlighted by our Years 3 and 4 camp at Sovereign Hill. The children were exemplary ambassadors for Alvie Primary School, demonstrating outstanding behaviour and enthusiasm throughout the experience. Despite the cold and wet weather, their positive attitudes and excitement never wavered.

Our Year 4 students had the unique opportunity to dress in period costume and participate as actors in the Wesleyan Day School. They experienced aspects of nineteenth-century schooling, including sewing and writing with ink pens for the girls, and drawing and writing activities for the boys. Meanwhile, the Year 3 students participated in educational sessions led by Sovereign Hill staff, where they dressed mannequins using historical clothing items and investigated the likely identities and social status of the individuals they represented.

Throughout the camp, students enjoyed a range of engaging activities, including underground mine tours, gold pouring demonstrations, traditional sweet-making presentations, and gold panning. For many students, the highlight of the camp was the spectacular Aura light and sound show on the second evening.

A visit to the famous lolly shop was also a favourite, with students delighting in purchasing traditional treats such as toffee apples, raspberry drops, and toffee umbrellas. While excitement levels meant there was not a great deal of sleep on the first night, by the second evening everyone was happily exhausted after two action-packed days.

Back in the classroom, students have been using their Sovereign Hill experiences to support their learning in English, where they are writing newspaper articles about the Eureka Stockade.

In Mathematics, students are learning about measurement, including length, perimeter, and area. They are particularly excited to begin a project in which they will design their own zoo and calculate the area and perimeter of various animal enclosures.

As part of our Social and Emotional Learning program, students have been exploring the importance of setting personal boundaries and confidently saying “no” when they feel uncomfortable. They have also been discussing situations where cooperation and flexibility are important, helping them develop sound judgement and respectful decision-making skills.

With the term moving so quickly, the holidays will be here before we know it!
