Art

In week 9, Grade 5/6 students engaged with Orphism as part of their elective subject. They drew inspiration from the work of artist Sonia Delaunay and examined the principles of abstract art, particularly the use of color and shape.

The students began by creating colourful shape collages using various colored papers, which they carefully cut and arranged. They then made complementary oil pastel drawings. By combining elements from both artworks, they produced a final design inspired by style of Orphism.

Grade 3/4 students have been learning about the art of loom weaving. Each student began by transforming a simple paper plate into a loom by cutting slits around the edges, providing a base for their weaving project. With colorful yarn, they learned the over-under method of weaving in a circular design.

Grade 1/2 students have been learning about geometric patterns and the art of weaving. They explored images of the Kente Cloth, a beautiful traditional garment from Ghana. Through this exploration, students discovered the process of creating cloth by interlacing fibers. They learned how to weave with paper, usign the under-over method, and thought carefully about their colour choices to reflect the vibrant colours seen in the Kente cloth designs. After completing their woven creations, students enhanced their pieces by adding geometric patterns, further reflecting the traditional designs of Kente textiles.

The Preps have been learning about the art of collage. They have explored geometric designs and are discovering how texture can be added to paintings for interesting effects. With a variety of tools, such as forks, spatulas, sponges, and spoons, students have been experimenting with techniques to add texture to their paint.

Inspired by the textured art of Eric Carle, they are in the process of creating their own painted paper collages, blending colour and texture in imaginative ways.
