Foundation Learning Community News

Term 3, Week10

After a busy term the Prep teaching team wish all of our community a happy and restful holiday break. We are looking forward to another fun-filled term to finish a very exciting first year of school!

Literacy:

We have begun to learn about comprehension strategies. These are things that successful readers do to help them understand what they are reading. Monitoring is when a reader notices when something doesn't make sense and rereads for clearer meaning.

'Click, Clack, Moo. Cows That Type,' is a fun text which we have been studying. We have drawn and written about the beginning, middle and end of the story, made predictions about what happens to the typewriter at the end of the book, learnt some new interesting vocabulary (furious, demand, impatient) and completed a craft.

Next term we will be putting all of our literacy skills together to write our own narratives. Watch this space!

Numeracy:

As an introduction to early division and multiplicative thinking we have been learning about sharing fairly and equally. Students have been very successful with this unit (children have an innate sense of fairness!) and have had a variety of hands on experiences to show their understanding, including making delicious biscuits as a follow up on the well loved book - 'The Doorbell Rang.'

Inquiry:

A very excited cohort met in the Prep Hall for our Wildlife Incursion. We have been investigating what it means to be healthy, especially in relation to plants and animals. To finish our term students have created Chick Houses using recycled materials. This project was an opportunity to work collaboratively and to follow the design process. We are displaying our finished projects on Friday morning with a before school open classroom.

Assembly:

Congratulations to all students who had their efforts recognised at our Week 8 assembly. We even had Saru our Maths Masters mascot visit to present our first keyrings!
