Growing UP

Introducing "Growing Up": A New Specialist Subject for Our Students
Dear Families,
We are excited to announce the introduction of a new subject called Growing Up at our school this year. This program has been thoughtfully developed to support our students in navigating the important developmental stages of childhood and adolescence. The program is part of the Victorian Health curriculum and will be taught across all year levels from Foundation to Year 12.
What is "Growing Up"?
Growing Up is a comprehensive program focused on relationships and sexuality education specifically designed to meet the diverse developmental needs of our students. The program recognises that all young people, including those with disability, deserve access to age-appropriate information about their bodies, relationships, social safety and wellbeing.
Why We're Introducing This Program
Research consistently shows that quality relationships and sexuality education lead to better health outcomes, improved decision-making skills, and increased safety awareness. Our Growing Up program provides students with essential knowledge and skills in a supportive, inclusive environment.
What Students Will Learn
The curriculum covers nine key areas:
- Identifying and expressing feelings and emotions
- Body awareness and understanding physical boundaries
- Public and private contexts and behaviours
- Personal identity and respecting diversity
- Protective behaviours for body safety and well-being
- Understanding puberty changes (upper primary & secondary students)
- Learning about conception to birth (secondary students)
- Building respectful, healthy relationships
- Making informed decisions and learning to ask for help
How It Will Be Taught
Classes will be taught by specialist teacher, Mim Papinniemi. The Primary school is on a semesterly rotation and will receive instruction one semester per year. Secondary students will be taught both semesters each year. Mim will teach the subject by presenting information in accessible, developmentally appropriate ways. Content will be delivered through discussion, fun activities, and visual supports to ensure understanding for all students.
Family Involvement
We believe families play a crucial role in conversations about growing up. To support you in this important role, we invite all HVS parents and carers to join us at The Nest – an inclusive and safe space designed specifically for these conversations.
These sessions offer opportunities for conversations and learning around respectful relationships and sexuality education. You'll gain insights into what your child is learning, have your questions answered, and receive guidance on continuing these important discussions at home.
Throughout the term, we'll also share information about upcoming Growing Up topics to help you stay informed about your child's learning journey.
For further inquiries about The Nest program, please contact Mim Papinniemi via SeeSaw or through the Front Office.
Thank you for your support in this space and we look forward to working with you this year!
