Grade 1 News

Hello Grade One families!
It has been a fantastic start to the year, students have settled into their classrooms beautifully.
The following are what students have been working on in the last five weeks.
English
During our English lessons this term, students have focused on revising previously learnt sounds, and have been introduced to new sounds including the following: /ay/, /ee/, /igh/, /oa/, /oo/, and /or/
Each lesson, students practice their formation of letters, write words that include the new sound, write sentences, and engage in fluency reading and storytelling.
Core Knowledge / Literature
This term, students have loved learning about the continents and countries of the world!
In this unit, students have been exploring different landmarks around the world and how to care for them. They have also engaged in learning about animals, food, and culture from different places around the globe.
Maths
So far this term, students have been revising their knowledge of addition and subtraction and the various strategies used to help solve problems and answer questions. Students are learning new strategies including 'counting on' using a number line, doubles facts to 10, finding fact families and counting backwards on a number line.
Reminders / Notifications / Events
- 1st April (week 10) Fairytale Fiasco Incursion (more information to come)
- 21st March Harmony Day, wear orange, no donation required
- Reading satchels to be brought to school each day and readers will be changed each Friday
- Please ensure that Compass is regularly being checked
- Please complete permission forms on Compass
Things to work on at home
English:
- Reading every night, ensuring this is written in their diary and it is signed by a parent/guardian
- Practising writing sounds /ay/, /ee/, /igh/, /oa/, /oo/, and /or/
- Practising writing words that include the sounds above
Maths:
- Formation of numbers
- Counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s (to prepare for future units)
- Addition to 10 or 20
- Subtraction within 10 or 20
