Art News

Students at Wimba Primary School have made a fantastic start to their learning in Visual Art this term. It was lovely to see many families joining us on Parent Teacher Interview night so students could demonstrate some of their learning and make artworks with their mums and dads. We enjoyed a fun night exploring printmaking techniques.
Foundation
Foundation students have been working hard on developing their art studio habits and following routines in the Art Room. They have been practising their cutting skills whilst learning how to work safely with equipment. Students have been focusing on the elements of Shape, Colour and Line. They have been exploring how artists use these elements in their artworks and incorporating them into artworks of their own. Students have learned how to layer geometric shapes to make a house, incorporate the three primary colours (red, yellow and blue) and draw a variety of different line styles.
Here are some of the lines our Foundation students can draw.

Year 1 & 2
Year 1 & 2 students have been continuing their learning about colour theory. They have been identifying warm and cool colours within works of art. Students have explored how colours can impact the mood or emotion an artwork is trying to convey to the audience. They have created some lovely heart prints inspired by American artist Jim Dine using warm colours for the heart and cool colours for the background. Students added black oil pastel shadows and used white acrylic paint to add highlights to make their work pop.

Year 3 & 4
Currently the Year 3 & 4 students are learning about Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. This learning will culminate with the amazing opportunity to travel to the National Gallery of Victoria on Tuesday 25th March to see an exhibition of her work. This stunning exhibition includes ten immersive experiences where students get to feel they are part of the artwork. They will be lead by an arts educator from the gallery to gain a greater understanding of Kusama’s inspiration and motivation behind her life’s work.
If you have not done so already, please log into Compass to give consent and payment by Friday 7th March so we can confirm numbers and our booking with the Gallery.
Year 5 & 6
The Year 5 & 6 students have been learning about the elements of Space and Form. They have been focusing on technical drawing and learning the skills of drawing in one-point perspective. Students have observed historical artworks to see how artists have established this technique to show space and depth. They have explored the work of UK artist Patrick Hughes and were fascinated with the way his ‘Reverspective’ paintings create an optical illusion when viewed. They are currently working on drawing a room using a vanishing point to create the angles required to demonstrate perspective.
