Principal's Report

According to leading education researcher Robert J Marzano ‘ the provision of a ‘guaranteed and viable curriculum’ is one of the factors that has the most impact on student learning.’ (Victorian Curriculum F–10 Revised curriculum planning and reporting guidelines 2023)

Marzano’s research is embedded in our College purpose statement:

Truganina P - 9 College delivers a 21st century guaranteed and viable curriculum that results in outstanding student achievement

Guaranteed refers to what is taught: the factual (content), procedural knowledge (skills) and conceptual understanding (essential learnings). Viable refers to the achievability for the curriculum sequenced and organised in such a way that students have ample opportunity to be taught and to learn.

At Truganina P - 9 College, we guarantee that:

  • what is taught is essential for your child to learn and is valuable across different subject disciplines
  • what is taught is sequenced and organised to build your child’s knowledge, skills and understanding at increasingly levels of complexity
  • what is taught is consistent in each classroom and in each year level so that every child has the opportunity to build on their prior knowledge.

The new Victorian F -10 Curriculum 2.0 was launched by the Minister of Education, the Hon. Ben Carrol in June 2024. Since the launch, Truganina P - 9 College has been engaged in a process of familiarising itself with the new curriculum.

This process involved teachers engaging with the curriculum and updating the College’s teaching and learning programs. These changes are being implemented this year.

Our new guaranteed and viable curriculum is knowledge rich, and supports our 2025 - 2028 School Strategic Plan. It will maximise the learning achievement and growth of every student and develops the capacity of all students to be active learners, leaders and citizens.

Our term 1 curriculum overviews were shared with our community in Week 3 during the Meet and Greet. They can be found on our College Website - please see link:

https://truganinap9.vic.edu.au/curriculum/curriculum-overviews/

These overviews provide families with the units of learning from each subject discipline, the strands and sub strands appropriate to the unit and the essential questions. Essential questions reflect the factual, procedural knowledge and conceptual understanding that will be explicitly taught, revised and reviewed in line with the new Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0. We recommend that families download the overviews to support discussions around learning at home.

The teaching and learning team: Jonathan Skipworth (Literacy), David Yacoub (Numeracy) and James Bayard (Student voice, agency and leadership) supported by Learning Specialists: Ivanka Fiamengo, Melanie Park, Rose Hashim, Ann Lee, Joanna Gee and Jessie Patterson look forward to sharing more about our teaching and learning program here at the College over the course of the year.
