This fortnight in Auslan, Grade Preps will be learning the topics Alphabet and Colours and Grades 1-6 students will learn about Breakfast and Transport. Grade Preps will learn to sign the alphabet and do activities that involve signing the first letter of their names. When learning about colour, Grade Preps will learn to sign the words: Rainbow, Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Purple, Orange, Pink, White, Grey, Gold, Silver, Brown and Black. The learning task will involve drawing and colouring in a rainbow and practising the signs for the colours.
Grades 1-6 will learn to sign breakfast words which include: milk, toast, juice, bread, egg, fruit, vegemite, cereal, jam, peanut butter, honey, yoghurt and bacon. Grade 1 and 2 students will draw their favourite breakfast and sign the words of the items that they like. Grade 3 and 4 students will create a breakfast menu and with a partner they will practise ordering items using Auslan. Grade 5 and 6 students will do a sorting activity by placing the signs in alphabetical order and working in groups to practise the breakfast signs.
When learning about Transport Grade 1-6 students will learn to sign the words: Transport, plane, train, car helicopter, tram, scooter, bike, skateboard and bus. Grade 1 and 2 students will play a click and clap game. This involves getting into a rhythm with clicking and clapping until the teacher points to a transport sign and students stop to practise the sign. From there they continue with the rhythm. Grade 3 and 4 students will work in groups using transport sign cards. They will pick cards and use those cards to make up a story and use Auslan to communicate the transport signs. Grade 5 and 6 students will work in pairs to design a trip and work out what transport they will use. Together they will use the transport signs and finger spell the places they will go.
As our students build their repertoire of words, engage in conversations and enjoy practising signs together as learnt by our students! Please scan the QR Code below which will provide you with YouTube videos to assist in practising together at home.
