The Latest from 5/6J

Our Year 5/6 students have been very busy over the last few weeks with lots of engaging learning opportunities.

⚽️ 🏐 Team Spirit Takes to the Field 🥎 🏉

This Term our students venture into the world of Winter Inter School Sports. Students have the opportunity to participate in one of four sports to represent our school and do us proud!

Soccer

In soccer our coach is Mr Cotesta. We go to the oval to practise on Fridays. During our training sessions we have been practising different skills. We have done some passing and shooting drills then we end our training with a game. We will be playing different schools over the next 2 Fridays. In soccer, to win a match you have to score more goals than the other team. Our players will be split into 2 teams, the A  team and the B team. One person from each team will be a captain.

Softball

On Fridays, the softball players gather in the oval to practise! Our softball coach is Miss T. We usually start with practising our throwing and catching skills. When you play Softball, teams are either the batting or fielding team. My favourite is batting because you get to run from base to base and your teammates cheer if you get a homerun. For fielding, you try to catch the ball with your glove and throw back to the base. If you throw to a base that a batter is running to, the batter is out! I love softball because it is an interesting and fun sport that is sometimes challenging, perfect for people who like to test their own ability!

Footy

For the next two weeks we will be playing offsite for Interschool sport. I am doing footy and our coach is Mr. Stokes. On Friday mornings we do training on the oval. We learn basic drills such as handballing, kicking to each other and aiming for the goals. If we are lucky we get to play a practise match. Our footy team is divided into two, an A team and B team.

Netball

In netball our coach is Mrs Sedony. Every Friday we all train together and she teaches us new drills. She also teaches us different ways to throw the ball. We have a chest pass, a lob, an overhead pass, a bounce pass and a shoulder pass. After we practise our passes with a group we end with a game. For the next 2 Fridays we will be going up against many schools in the area. We also have 2 teams, the A and the B team. There will also be 2 captains for each team. In netball there is meant to be 7 players at a time on the court. The different positions in netball are: Centre (C), Wing Defense (WD), Wing Attack (WA), Goalkeeper (GK), Goal Attack (GA), Goal Shooter (GS) and goal Defense (GD). I recommend this sport because I think it’s a bit of a challenge but is still very fun.

🛍️ Inquiry in Action: Behind the Stalls 🛍️

This term our students have been engaging in our Economics and Business unit. They have been learning how businesses work and how to create their very own charity market stalls! From planning products to setting prices and promoting their ideas, students are developing entrepreneurial skills while supporting a good cause. It’s all about making smart decisions—and making a difference.

Big Ideas & Small Stalls

In Inquiry, we have been learning about businesses and how they work. We’ve learnt things like basic income, expenses, interest on savings and much more. We are working towards creating our very own Year 5/6 charity Market Stall. We were put into groups of three, with one person in each class. Currently we are creating our own products and services. We also need to create posters, flyers, price tags and an optional website for your product to help us advertise our businesses.

🎤 Planning, Pitching, Preparing! 🦈

Part of the business design process was to pitch our idea in a Shark Tank style presentation. We had to come up with an idea of what we are going to sell and how we were going to promote our businesses. The Year 5/6 teachers were the ‘sharks’. Once we got called up to present our idea to the teacher we were with, asked us some questions about our idea. After that we either did or didn’t got approved straight away. If you didn’t get approved you would have to come up with another idea or make changes to our original idea to make it better. The teachers helped us fix our business ideas so we would then re-pitch and become approved.

Curious Creators, Budding Entrepreneurs

There will be many different types of businesses in our Market Stall. All of the stalls look very interesting and everyone is having a lot of fun creating their products and advertising for it. Some of the businesses that have been created include; keychains, arcades, slime, scents, sport themed flags, bookmarks, bottle accessories, hair accessories and a lot more. Everyone in the school will get the chance to be a consumer and buy the things that the 5/6 ‘s are going to be selling.

We have been learning about different types of advertising and that you have to stand out in the crowd to grab everyone's attention. The different types of advertising we have learnt about include: tv commercials, newspaper ads, billboards, signs on public transport, YouTube ads and many more. We have been working on creating advertising for our Market stall businesses. Groups have been working on posters, signs and other types of marketing to help promote our businesses.

💰 Banqer - Money Experts of the Future 💰

Banqer is an online learning platform used to teach children how to manage money and expenses. In Banqer you can be given rewards, fines, earn interest on savings as well as apply for jobs to earn money. We started using Banqer to help us think about our money, just like in the real world. One thing we’ve learned using Banqer is what compound interest is. Banqer is a fun way to learn and manage your money and we’ve really enjoyed using it.

We cannot wait to invite all of the classes to our Market Stall opening soon!

Here are some sneak peaks of what will be on offer:

💻Tech Showcase: Creating Commercials🎥

For STEM, we have been learning how to use Wevideo. Wevideo is a platform where you can make and edit videos. We have been using this as we wish to make videos or our market stall.

To get familiar with the software, we created commercials for objects we have at home. Some commercials that were created include: cereal, sports equipment, toilet paper and many other objects. We learnt about what makes a good advertisement and what businesses need to do so they can captivate an audience as future consumers. To make our commercials enticing, we got to play around with music, transitions, special effects and more.

Something we found challenging was having to drag and drop all of our images, videos, music and transitions so we could upload them into the ad. We created our videos over a few lessons and in each lesson we learnt something new about WeVideo.

Coexist Through Curiosity: Understanding Global Religions

This term we have been learning about different global religions. These religions have included: Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism. We learnt about the religions from all of the Year 5/6 teachers in our Religion rotation lessons. Mrs Sedony taught us about Buddhism, Mr Cotesta taught us about Islam and we learnt about Hinduism with Miss T. I learnt about the Five Pillars of Islam and that there are millions of Gods and Goddesses in Hinduism. Next time, I would like to learn about how the Islamic call to prayer is broadcast from the mosque.

-  Noah

On Tuesday we are going to different places of worship as part of an excursion. We will be visiting a Buddhist temple, an Islamic Mosque and a Hindu temple. At the places of worship we will learn more about all the religions and how they show their faith. We are all looking forward to seeing in real life what we learnt about during our rotation lessons.

One thing I learnt is that Hindus have over 30 million GODS! I think it would be interesting if we could see a palace with the huge Buddhas.

- Michaela N

As we learnt about the different religions, we created some posters to share our new knowledge. See some below.

🐦‍⬛ A Deep Dive into a Good Book 🐦‍⬛

For reading we have been learning about a book called Black Cockatoo. In the book there is a character called Mia who rescues a dirrarn which is a type of bird. Mia also goes on many adventures and we learn a lot about Mia and her culture. After reading the book, we wrote a character analysis about Mia and her family. My favourite part of the book was when we got to learn more about Mia and when she saves the dirrarn. I found it very interesting to see how Mia cares for animals and about her culture.

- Yukith

In reading we’ve been reading Black Cockatoo and learned about Mia, the main character and her perspectives on life. The 5/6s wrote a character analysis for her and learnt more about the character when we read more. The book is all about Mia and her adventures through her culture, family life, and her liking for animals. She’s a culturally young girl determined to go through the hardships of life. My favorite part is when she rescues the dirrarn and helps it heal

- Korobee

We have also begun reading Dirrarn, which follows Mia as she finds herself at boarding school and the faces the challenge of living thousands of kilometers away from home, family and the Country she loves.
