Secondary

Dear Families
As a core principle of an Ignatian education, Magis, meaning 'more; to a greater extent' guides us to provide students with opportunities to use their God-given talents in the pursuit of academic excellence. Under the leadership of Ms Daisy Farley, Head of Magis and Jennifer Ong, 2025 Magis Captain, our Magis students participate in an extensive range of opportunities for personal challenge and to represent the College. Competing against students from other schools, the annual Francis Burt Mock Trial and WA Debating League competitions have commenced, with teams performing strongly in each of the rounds to date. A hotly contested Interhouse competition, the College Chess Tournament has also commenced at lunchtimes in the St Ignatius Centre Library, and we congratulations all players who have progressed to the next round. To complement HASS Week, students this week have participated in the next round of Magis Challenges during Homeroom, testing their knowledge of the Humanities, Arts, Languages and Literature. The College Public Speaking Competition heats will take place over the coming weeks, with the Grand Final scheduled for next term. We wish our World Scholars best of luck as they compete at the Perth Round of the World Scholars Cup today and tomorrow.
Also striving for the Magis are members of the Academic Leadership Team, who this week completed training with Growth Coaching International to strengthen their skills as instructional coaches on ‘The ‘Impact Cycle’. A strategic objective in our pursuit of inspiring educational excellence, all teaching staff have set themselves a professional goal for the year and are being supported by their Head of Learning Area as coach. The work of Jim Knight, The Impact Cycle is a process coaches use to partner with teachers to help them have a positive impact on student learning and wellbeing. To do this, Heads of Learning Areas collaborate with teachers to get a clear picture of current reality, identify goals, select teaching strategies to meet the goals, monitor progress through the collation of evidence and problem-solve until the goals are met. All professional goals are informed by our current College learning goal: to respond to the needs of students through effective student identification, tracking of student data and differentiated learning strategies to ensure learning growth. Thank you to Mr Joel Wynn, Director of Teacher Professional Growth for his coordination of this informative and valuable professional learning for our middle leaders and his ongoing work with teachers to strengthen their practice and positive impact on students.
Thank you to the wonderful Parents' Association for organising a delicious morning tea for staff to take a break from classes, exam marking and report writing to enjoy this morning. It was greatly appreciated.

Year 11 Design and Technologies - Wood
After completing the technical drawings using Autodesk Fusion, Year 11 students are well underway into the construction of their solid timber furniture designs. A variety of different complex joinery techniques have been included in their work. A great display of student stepping out of their comfort zone and developing their own craftsmanship as designers.
Year 12 Design and Technologies - Wood
Year 12 students have been researching, testing and trialing an exploratory technique to be included in their final design. It is wonderful and exciting to see a variety of different techniques being explored. Some of the techniques included are end-lamination, mortise and tenon joint with removal peg, silicon molds, resin casting and curved lamination techniques. A brilliant display of curiosity and creativity.
