Green PLC

Junior Secondary Students Program

In maths this term, we have been learning how to identify familiar locations on a school map, as well as key community locations such as toilets, places to find help, and transport options. In week 6, three of the Green PLC classes set off on an adventure to Werribee Open Range Zoo to celebrate our learning about location in maths.

Students were prepared with a social story showing them key locations we would need to find during the day, including the picnic area, safari bus boarding point, toilets, and the new Elephant and Waterhole Trail. While at Werribee Zoo, we used the zoo's map and practiced locating signs that help us find our destinations, as well as modelling the use of verbal and AAC language.

After a delicious morning tea, we embarked on a safari bus tour where we were lucky to see blackbucks leaping in front of the bus, inquisitive ostriches and giraffes getting close to the bus, a baby rhino lounging with his mum, and a dazzle of zebras. After our safari tour, we enjoyed our lunch with the elephants before walking to the school buses for our drive back to school. Thank you to our wonderful staff and students for a great experience at the Werribee Open Range Zoo.

HVS Senior Secondary Pathways Program

We are excited to share that our Senior Secondary students recently participated in the Winds of Joy sailing excursion as part of our Community Connect Program, creating unforgettable memories on the water! It was an amazing experience, and we are so proud of how they embraced the adventure and tried new things with such enthusiasm.

The students had a wonderful time engaging with the experienced crew, who served as excellent mentors and role models throughout the day. Whether it was learning to sail, feeling the wind in their hair, or working together as a team, each student stepped out of their comfort zone and made the most of the day.

During their maritime adventure, students learnt about boat operations and safety while taking turns steering the vessel, developing confidence and practical skills in a unique environment. The hands-on experience provided valuable opportunities for teamwork, communication, and building relationships with adults in a real-world setting.

After their time on the water navigating the winds and waves, the groups finished their adventure at a cozy cafe, warming up with hot chocolates - the perfect way to conclude their sailing experience. It's truly heartwarming to see them grow in confidence and discover new skills!

This excursion exemplifies how our Community Connect Program creates meaningful pathways to independence while celebrating our students' unique abilities and building essential life skills through authentic, engaging experiences.
