Level 2: Connect

Looking ahead to Week 9 & 10

Maths

Next week in Math:

We will be creating an analog clock from a paper plate, showing the placement of the numbers and the 2 hands, and explaining how long it takes for the 2 hands to move around the clock face and what time unit each is showing. We will also focus on telling the time especially, on the hour as well as half past and quarter past times.

An additional focus will be the use of calendars and how they are used.

We will also be revising past topics from this Term.

Reading

Next week, we'll begin our reading unit on Great Inventions. Throughout the week, students will explore and discuss key questions such as:

  • What defines an invention, and who is considered an inventor?
  • In what ways do early Indigenous Australian inventions continue to influence society today?
  • How have transportation innovations transformed the way we travel?

We encourage you to engage with your child about these topics at home. We hope these discussions spark curiosity and lead to enriching conversations around your dinner tables!

Take Home Readers

Please note that our take home readers are back, up and running! We will ensure your child has books sent home with them and Fridays will be the day books will be changed each week.

Writing

In Writing this week, we’ll be learning how to write compound sentences by using words like for, and, but, and or to join ideas together. This helps students add more detail and variety to their writing. We’ll also be reviewing how to use commas correctly when writing lists, making sure our writing is clear and easy to read.

Core Literacy

Over the past two weeks, students have been building on their phonics knowledge, focusing on new spelling patterns and heart words.

In Week 7, students explored the digraph or (which makes an /er/ sound), the prefix pre-, and the heart words: first, girl, and hurt.

In Week 8, students leant the quadgraph augh (which makes an /aw/ sound), the prefix inter-, and the heart words: start, change, and easy.

Looking ahead in Core Literacy:

  • Week 9: Students will learn the digraph ei (which makes two sounds - long e and long a sound), the prefix trans-, and the heart words: muscle, island and ocean.
  • Week 10: Students will learn the digraph gn (the g is silent, only the n is pronounced), the prefix con-/com-, and the heart words: often, question and animal

Inquiry - Uncovering the Past: Young Historians in Action

Local History Project: Telling the Story of Sandringham and Black Rock

Over the next two weeks, our Year 2 students will be bringing history to life as they create their own stories about a special site in Sandringham. After researching their chosen location—such as the Band Rotunda, the Clock Tower, or the track from Sandringham to Black Rock Beach—they will now begin crafting a story that explains how the site was created, what it was used for in the past, and how it is used today or what it represents in our community.

Students will have the choice to present their learning in a way that suits their strengths and interests. Some may choose to write a short story, while others might prefer to design a colourful poster. This project helps students understand change over time, while also building their skills in writing, creativity, and communication. We’re looking forward to seeing their wonderful work and the pride they take in learning about their local area!

Warm regards,

Eileen Thompson, Kym Seccull, Anthony Klvac & Kylie Clarke
