Specialist Happenings

 Visual Art

We have had some wonderful art happening in the art room. Year 3 have been busy creating their individual class welcome to country and decorating them using indigenous symbols representing things they are thankful for.

Year 6 have been painting some absolutely spectacular city scapes while developing their watercolour skills and learning some tricks of the trade to make their artworks extra special.

I would like to extend another massive congratulations to Alan Mata who won the Bayside Council, Ellen Jose Reconciliation week art contest for his age group.

His work pictured below is absolutely outstanding. A well-deserved win.

Mandarin

Our Foundation students have been exploring the beauty of nature through Mandarin! They’ve been learning words like tree (树), cloud (云), flower (花), and mountain (山). To expand their vocabulary, we’ve been using descriptive words like “big” (大 dà) and “small” (小 xiǎo) to talk about nature—for example, “big tree” (大树) and “small flower” (小花).

Students have also been practising writing these characters carefully, learning stroke order and developing confidence in their Chinese handwriting. It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity and creativity shine as they combine nature vocabulary with descriptive language!

Our Grade 3/4 students have been expanding their Mandarin skills by learning vocabulary for different rooms in the house, such as kitchen (厨房), living room (客厅), bedroom (房间), and bathroom (浴室).

Building on their previous unit about hobbies, students are now combining both topics to create more detailed and meaningful sentences. For example, they can now say: “爸爸在厨房看书。” (Bàba zài chúfáng kàn shū) – "Dad is in the kitchen reading."

Students are doing a fantastic job using location words, family members, and hobby verbs to describe what someone is doing and where. It’s been exciting to watch their sentences grow longer and more complex!

Well done, Grade 3/4! Keep up the great work!

You are all amazing!

Physical Education

Our Foundation to Level 2 students have just wrapped up our unit on throwing and catching. We’ve been working on pointing at our target and keeping our back foot grounded. Ask your child what it means to “squish the bug” and see if they remember!

Next up, we’ll be turning our attention to kicking skills.

For our Year 3 – 6 students, we’re beginning to shift our focus to athletics in the lead-up to our House Athletics Carnival early next term. This week, we’ve been working on finding our lead foot, practising sprint starts, and learning the basics of the long jump.

Below is a copy of the T2 Interschool Sports timetable showing where the 5/6 students play each week.

Science

Foundation

On the way to Science 0A were fortunate to see a rainbow!  This fortnight we have studied our Moon and the stars. We have made models of the Moon, complete with craters.

Level 1 & 2s

Level 1s & 2s have completed our maps of the solar system, with the 8 planets circling the sun.

Level 3 & 4s

Did you know that in the 1800s the settlement of Melbourne was known as "Marvellous Smellbourne"? Our middle school scientists are learning about household and community water and sewerage.

Level 5 & 6s

Our senior scientists are learning about the theory of Continental Drift and tectonic plates.

Pollinator Gardens

Have you had the chance to wander through the front garden, in front of the Science Room, and to see the pollinator garden planted by Level 4?

We are also thrilled that a group of our parents and Village Zero are working with us to plant a pollinator garden behind Science, beside the flag poles. This garden will connect with a series of gardens around Bayside. We would love for our parents to join us and be involved in this planting:

When:  Friday 20th June

Time:  2.00 - 3.30 pm

Where:  meet at the flagpoles

** You must have a WWCC to be involved in this event.
