Inquiry
During Week 7 we learnt about financial literacy as it relates to purchasing items on credit cards compared to using available funds. In Week 8 we focused on the need for businesses to become more sustainable. We have now started our Upcycle Project, which requires students to create a new or improved product from items that might otherwise go to be recycled or go to landfill.
Maths
Our Grade 5 students have been diving into the world of probability. They’ve been busy conducting a range of hands-on chance experiments using dice, spinners, and coloured counters to explore how likely different outcomes are. Through these engaging activities, students have learned to identify all possible outcomes and calculate the fractional probability of each one. It’s been a fantastic opportunity for students to apply mathematical thinking in a fun and practical way, deepening their understanding of chance and uncertainty.
Literacy
Over the past two weeks, Year 5 students have continued to engage deeply with the mentor text Landovel to develop their reading comprehension skills, with a particular focus on making inferences. Through guided discussions and targeted activities, students practiced drawing conclusions beyond the literal meaning of the text, enhancing their critical thinking and understanding of nuanced details.
In addition to inferencing, students worked on improving their reading fluency by participating in paired reading exercises. Using a carefully selected passage aligned with Inquiry content, they practiced reading aloud with expression and accuracy, building confidence and oral reading skills.
In writing, students explored various creative forms including comic strips, narratives, and novel writing. These tasks encouraged them to develop storytelling skills, structure their ideas effectively, and experiment with different writing styles and formats.
All in all, it’s been a great couple of weeks focused on building both reading and writing skills in a fun and engaging way.
Bike Education
This week, our Grade 5 students began their Bike Education program, which will run every Wednesday until the end of term. In their first session, students learned important road safety rules, how to properly check their bike and helmet before riding, and how to use the ‘power position’ to take off safely and confidently. It’s been a great start to the program, and we’re looking forward to seeing their skills and confidence grow each week.
