Inquiry:
Across the previous few weeks, our Level 4 students have put their research hats on, and have been investigating a chosen celebration or commemoration. To complete this project, the students have been practising a number of different skills from transforming quality research into engaging, descriptive paragraphs, while using their student agency to gain choice over constructing interesting research questions and managing their time to ensure they are completing each step of the project with finesse.
We are now moving into the next stage of the project, where students are beginning to publish their findings in the form of informative booklets. They are using their research to plan, draft, and design content that communicates their understanding clearly and creatively.
It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and pride in their work as the projects take shape.
Literacy:
In our Literacy lessons, the Level 4 students have been analysing the text 'Storm Boy' by Colin Theile, focusing particularly on how we can interpret meaning from a text and unpack the purpose of the novel. By evaluating the structures, language features, and word choice in the text, we have been looking at how we can use these strategies to strengthen our own writing pieces.
Our specific writing focus looks at information reports. The Level 4 students have began to research a chosen Australian Animal, and have been practising efficient note taking to use in their information report. As we unpack how vocabulary can hook the readers attention, the Level 4 students will be constructing their information reports, transforming their researched information into structured paragraphs to create an engaging, informative writing pieces about their chosen animal.
In Core Literacy, students have been reviewing the 1-1-1/ Doubling Rule.
✅ When to double the last letter:
If a word:
1. Has 1 syllable
2. Ends with 1 vowel and 1 consonant
3. And you're adding a vowel suffix (like -ing, -ed, -er)
👉 Then DOUBLE the last letter!
Their next focus is the y to i rule.
✅ When to change Y to I:
If a word ends in a consonant + y
👉 Change the y to i when adding a suffix (like -ed, -er, -est)
Numeracy:
Over the past couple of weeks, our Level 4 students have been diving into the world of fractions in a fun and interactive way. They've been folding paper to create halves, quarters, and eighths, and discovering how different fractions can be equivalent—like realising that 1/2 is the same as 2/4 or 4/8. These hands-on activities have helped them understand fractions better and see the connections between them.
In the coming weeks we will be practising matching improper fractions to their equivalent mixed numbers and identifying visual representations of fractions and mixed numbers. Through discussions and activities, students will explain why certain items in a set do not belong, supporting their reasoning with evidence. This encourages critical thinking and a deeper understanding of fractions.
It's been great to see the students so engaged and enjoying their learning journey with fractions
