Literacy

In Literacy we are continuing to learn about the Etymology of words which is the origin of how words were formed. We have been learning about the Latin word 'zo' which means animal.  We explored how this word forms other words by adding prefixes and suffixes. For example, zo + ology = zoology and zoo + keeper = zookeeper and zo + ologist = zoologist. There are many other words which we formed using 'zo' as the base word and adding various prefixes and suffixes.

We have also been learning about Homophones which are words that sound the same but have different spelling and different meanings. For example, wear/ where/ we're are homophones but have different spelling and meanings. Other examples are there/ their/ they're and by/ bye/ buy. There are many examples of homophones which your child could tell you about how they remember them. Isla S in 3A came up with a way to remember morning and mourning - morn comes from old English meaning sunrise and mourn comes from old English meaning grief and sorrow.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about Equivalent Fractions as well as dividing groups and naming these divided groups as fractions. For example, 10 divided by 2 = 5. We can rename this to 1/2 of 10 = 5. Another example might be 1/5 of 10 apples = 2.

Equivalent fractions have the same value but look different. For example, 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 5/10 are equivalent fractions because they represent half of something. This concept can be difficult for the students to comprehend so the visual representation is ideal for teaching and learning.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the students are continuing to learn about geography, resources and sustainability.  All Level 3 students have now commenced their ERP for Term 2. They have chosen a sustainability 'problem' and are working on an invention to manage or resolve the 'problem'.
