From the Principal

Life at MSC continues to see students participating in events in and out of the classroom.
The week really began with our senior Aerobics team, 'Atkinspire', as well as our duo, the 'Party Starters' qualify for National Aerobics competition last Saturday and will head to Hobart in August. Congratulations to all. Congratulations is also extended to team ‘Adrenaline’ who placed 4th in the Junior Stage 2 section and team ‘Steptacular’ placing 6th in the Junior Stage 2 section. Well done everyone. Thankyou to Indie Jowett and Amy Salter for your work with the teams.
Our senior students are completing SACs and will sit the GAT (General Achievement Test) in the next couple of weeks. Whilst our VM students attend interviews. Yr 10 and Yr 11 students will sit mid-year exams and our junior students will sit the PAT assessments for Reading and Numeracy.
Students in Yrs 9 and 10 have participated in interschool sports for Soccer, AFL, Netball and Badminton.
Thirty nine girls attended the Trade and Tech Fit Expo in Melbourne. The expo, which is open exclusively to female and gender diverse students, is an event that fosters a welcoming and enthusiastic atmosphere that showcases engaging displays, supportive discussions and an array of career opportunities in traditionally male dominated fields. It provides a safe and equitable space where students engage with female tradies, apprentices and industry professionals, providing insight into the breadth of career pathways where female and gender diverse people are underrepresented.
Our Koorie students attended the KELiS (Koorie Emerging Leaders in School) at Mount Eliza Secondary College. Students took part in three workshops on a rotation including Culture, food and wellbeing, bush walk, foods and traditional tools presentation, yarning and damper around the pizza oven while discussing ways to improving outcomes for First Nations.
Our Year 12 students attended TRAG (Teenage Road Accident Group). Mornington Peninsula has the highest rate of roadside accidents in Victoria and those aged 15-25 are the most vulnerable in our community. TRAG is a local program that aims to reduce incidences of road trauma in this age group by supporting our students to make safe choices while on the road. The program is run and presented by people who have had to deal with the consequences of road trauma first-hand, including Victoria Police, CFA, Ambulance Victoria, SES and victims of road trauma, as well as family members who have lost loved ones. This was very confronting for many students and staff and some sought the support of our Wellbeing team.
Mornington Secondary College is seeking an expression of interest from our community to join School Council as a parent member. This is a casual position until February 2026.
Council meets on a Tuesday commencing at 5pm at the College. There are five meetings to attend for the remainder of this year. If you are interested in this position, please contact Allison Betts 5970 0200.
Thankyou for your support as we continue to STRIVE for excellence in every classroom.

100 Days of Year 7 Celebration, Excursions & Curriculum Feedback
It’s hard to believe, but our Year 7 students are fast approaching their 100th day of secondary school! To mark this special milestone, we’ve planned a day full of exciting and meaningful activities to celebrate the journey our students have taken since starting at Mornington Secondary College. From creative workshops to team-building games, the day will be a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on their achievements, connect with peers, and enjoy some well-deserved fun.
In addition, we’ve recently sent home the Year 7 Curriculum Booklet, which outlines key learning areas and opportunities for the remainder of the year. Inside the booklet, you’ll find a QR code linking to a short feedback form — and we’d love to hear your thoughts! Our goal is 100% family participation. As an added incentive, families who complete the form will go into a draw to win one of ten canteen vouchers, with the prizes awarded to the students of the winning entries. So, parents and carers — we’d love for you to be in the draw! Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s learning journey.
Looking ahead, on Monday 17 June, all Year 7, 8 and 9 students will be on excursion while our senior students remain at school to sit the General Achievement Test (GAT).
- Year 7 students will head to Werribee Open Range Zoo
- Year 8 students will enjoy a day at the Melbourne Zoo
- Year 9 students will take part in a Connect Day at General Public Frankston, with arcade games and bowling on the agenda
We hope all our students have a fantastic day out, and we wish everyone an extra special break over the upcoming long weekend!

Senior School
To students and families of the Mornington Senior School,
Congratulations to our Senior Girls Aerobics team (Atkinspire) who have qualified for National Finals after a fantastic performance in the State Finals over the weekend, after finishing a close 4th (best performed government school in Victoria). They’ll be joined by our first senior girls’ duo(Party Starters) who finished 3rd in the state! To my un-trained eye, I thought they were clearly the best! So well done to Seren, Sophie, Eleanor, Olivia, Mya, Anna and Elise! Good luck in Nationals in August! Well done to Indie for all her work coaching them!
Exam season is on the way…
VCAA General Achievement Test (GAT)
GAT preparation continues for VCE students studying a Unit 3 & 4 subject in 2025. Our VCE VM and Year 11s doing a Year 12 subject this week were presented with information about the GAT and will have the opportunity to practice some tasks from previous GATs, to help with their preparation.
Year 12 TRAG excursion
Our Year 12 students attended the TRAG excursion on Tuesday this week. It was a great reminder of the importance of road safety for young people, especially in their first few years of driving, while they develop their skills. The message can certainly be confronting for anyone who has been to the presentation, but the messages are vitally important, and our students were certainly given reason to pause and reflect on how they will act as young drivers. Thank you to the staff who attended and also those who prepared a BBQ for the students when we returned to school so we could share some food, debrief and unpack our thoughts. As always, our students were great role models for the school.
Students of the Month of May
I’d like to recognise 6 students who have been selected as the Senior School AP students of the month of May. Their efforts have been seen by their teams and I’m proud to have the opportunity to publicly acknowledge them! Well done to the students below. Keep up your great work!

Do Exams Really Matter?
Around this time each year, we often hear students say, “I won’t need exams in the future,” or “My chosen pathway doesn’t require me to sit exams.” While there’s some truth to these statements—many pathways don’t rely heavily on final exams—students might be surprised at how often assessments or similar challenges reappear throughout life.
But it’s worth stepping back and looking at what exams actually teach us. Beyond the content, exams develop a wide range of skills that have lasting value, no matter what path you choose.
Here are just a few important life skills shaped through exam preparation:
- Handling Pressure and Stress: Sitting exams teaches you to manage stress, perform under pressure, and stay calm when it matters most—skills you’ll need in job interviews, presentations, and big life decisions.
- Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Exams challenge you to think deeply, solve problems quickly, and apply knowledge. These are key abilities in nearly every career and life situation.
- Goal Setting and Self-Discipline: Preparing for exams requires you to set goals, create a plan, and follow through. These habits support success in both personal projects and professional growth.
- Memory and Focus: Regular study improves your ability to retain information, concentrate, and organize your thoughts—skills that carry over into daily life, ongoing learning, and complex work tasks.
- Time Management: Balancing study with other responsibilities sharpens your ability to plan, prioritize, and use your time wisely—an essential skill in adult life.
- Confidence and Self-Belief: Overcoming the challenge of exams builds confidence and shows you what you're capable of. This self-belief is vital when facing new challenges or stepping outside your comfort zone.
So yes, exams matter—but maybe not for the reasons you think. They’re not just about the result on paper; they’re an opportunity to build the skills and habits that help you succeed long after school is over.
As we head into the Senior school exam period students have time to not only improve their performance but also strengthen the broader skills that will benefit them well into the future.

School Contributions - Sporting Equipment Funds
Schools provide students with free instruction to fulfil the standard curriculum requirements and we want to remind you that all contributions are voluntary.
Nevertheless, the ongoing support of our families ensures that our school can offer the best possible education, support and resources for our students. We want to thank you for all your support. This has made a huge difference to our school and the programs we can offer.
However, there are a number of areas that need further support. One of these areas is the Sporting Equipment Fund. It is simple to contribute and can be done via Compass. Every little bit helps, so if you haven't contributed already, please do.
Our goal is to provide our students with safe, modern, and inclusive equipment that allows everyone to participate and thrive in physical activities and outdoor education learning opportunities. Your contribution can make a direct impact on the health, confidence and performance of your students.
Contributions towards the School Equipment Fund are needed to purchase:
- representative MSC sports uniforms
- equipment for inter school sports; footballs, soccer balls, netballs, badminton racquets, etc
- Outdoor Education equipment; tents, trangias, fuel bottles, sleeping mats and backpacks
- FIT Club equipment for PE classes and free lunchtime FIT Club (open to all MSC students)
These items deteriorate through normal wear and tear, so annual contributions from families ensure our students can perform at their best. The recommended contribution for 2025 is $20 per student.
If you require further assistance on how to contribute, please contact our office team on Ph. 5970 0200 or via email.
Aerobics - State Finals
On Saturday May 31st we took 3 teams and our Duo to the State Finals in Rowville. This is one of the largest groups of students MSC has taken to States in years! They all put on incredible performances and made us very very proud.
Our senior team 'Atkinspire', as well as our duo, the 'Party Starters' qualified for Nationals and will be competing at Hobart in August. The results for the day were as follows:
- Party Starters - 3rd Place in the Secondary Pair/ Trio Orange section (progress to the National Championships)
- Atkinspire - 4th Place in the Senior Stage 2 section (progress to the National Championships)
- Adrenaline - 4th Place in the Junior Stage 2 section
- Steptacular - 6th Place in the Junior Stage 2 section
Yet again, a huge thank you to Jenny Vanin for helping with the smooth running of the event. The students were very lucky to have so much support backstage! Also, to Amy Salter for helping coach our squad in the lead up to States. And to Nick Evans for coming down and cheering on our girls.
The Stage 2 section is one of the tightest in the country, so they should all be so proud of themselves for their achievements. They put it all on the stage, and I couldn't be prouder of this group.
To help with fundraising towards travelling to Nationals at Hobart in August, please pop in and buy a sausage or cold drink from our Aerobics Squad at Bunnings Hastings on Monday 9th June.

Year 12 - TRAG: Teenage Road Accident Group
This week our Year 12 cohort attended a TRAG session in Mt Martha. This is a fantastic presentation, although confronting, that allows our students to hear from police officers, SES workers and paramedics, who are on the front-line attending car accidents that often involve young people, to hear their stories and what they face as part of their job. Our students also heard from family members of young people who had passed in road tragedies.
These presentations are not designed to scare our students around driving but are designed to help our young people make better choices either as a driver or a passenger so they do not become another statistic.
Remember. Drive4Life.

Year 11VM Biggest Morning Tea
On Tuesday 3rd June Year 11 VM students organised 'The Biggest Morning Tea' as part of one of their assessment tasks. Not only is organising the event a great learning experience for our Year 11 VM students, but Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is also a very worthy cause which raises vital funds for the Cancer Council, helping to make a big difference for those impacted by cancer.
In preparation for the event students promoted the morning tea to MSC staff by displaying posters around the school and pre-selling entry tickets. On the day students were hands on with room decorating and set up, BBQ cooking, raffle ticket sales, Guess the Lollies competitions, speeches, and even the washing up!
We'd like to acknowledge and thank the following businesses who generously donated items for our fundraising event, helping to make it a successful morning:
- Lindens Butcher (Bentons Square)
- The Butchers Club (Mornington Central)
- Bakers Delight
- Coles
- Woolworths
- Penni Ave Distillery
- Baked In
- Bunnings
- Commonfolk

Intermediate Girls netball
On Tuesday 3rd June we took two very eager netball teams to Mornington to compete in the Intermediate Girls Netball competition.
The girls had a great time, with all girls trying their best and playing some sensational netball. Congratulations to our A team, consisting of 9 Year 9 girls, who took out the A Grade competition against combined Year 9-10 teams from other schools. After going through the day undefeated, the A team now move on to Southern Metropolitan Region (SMR) competition. Also, congratulations to our B Team who came runners up, just missing out on taking out the B grade title on percentage.
A big thank-you to Abby Garlick who coached the B Team and Kobi Lawson for all her amazing organisation and help on the day.

Intermediate Boys Soccer
The boys travelled to Emil Madsen Reserve at Mount Eliza for Division Soccer. They played 4 great games, but sadly lost a close game to Dromana in the A pool. The boys went on to play Rosebud in the B pool final and finished 4th.
They all showed great skills and determination throughout the entire day and the weather remained kind to us.

They were put in a tough pool with Dromana and Rosebud and were successful in beating our toughest opponent Dromana by 16 points and Rosebud by 24 points. The final against Westernport saw us win easily by 34 points. With a handful of players returning from interleague commitments we go on to the next round with confidence. Intermediate Boys and Girls Badminton
On Tuesday 3rd June the Year 9/10 Boys and Girls Southern Peninsula Division (SPD) Badminton Championships were held at our school. We had a boy's team, and two girls' teams entered in the competition. The competition was run in a very competitive but friendly manner with all students from our division working cooperatively together.
Our boy's team did very well to place third overall winning, three out of their 5 matches. Our girl's B team were also very competitive placing equal 4th. Our girl’s A team won all their matches to win the SPD championship which was an outstanding effort! The girl’s will now progress on to play in the Southern Metro Region championships to be held at the Springers Leisure Centre on Friday 25th July.

Year 9 Sports and Recreation: Gravity Zone
On Friday 30th May our Year 9 Sport and Recreation students enjoyed an exciting and energetic excursion to Gravity Zone, a local indoor trampoline and activity centre. The day provided students with the opportunity to explore a popular recreational facility within our community while engaging in a fun and active learning experience.
Throughout the visit, students participated in a range of activities including free jumping, dodgeball, and the ninja course. These activities not only allowed them to be physically active but also helped them work towards achieving their current performance task goal — being active for at least 60 minutes each day.
The excursion highlighted the importance of finding enjoyable ways to stay active outside of school and encouraged students to think about how recreational facilities like Gravity Zone can support their health and fitness goals. It was fantastic to see students challenging themselves physically, building confidence, and having fun with their peers in a safe and supportive environment.

Year 11 Master Chef Challenge: A Feast of Knowledge and Nutrition
As part of their studies in Health & Human Development – Unit 1, Area of Study 3: Nutrition in Youth, Year 11 students recently took part in a much-anticipated Master Chef competition. Working individually or in pairs, students were challenged to create a nutritious, well-balanced meal that aligned with the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating.
The competition allowed students to bring their classroom learning to life by planning, preparing, and presenting meals that reflected their understanding of healthy eating and youth nutrition. Dishes were judged by a panel of teachers based on three key criteria: nutritional value, taste, and presentation.
In Mrs Dixon’s class, the competition was fierce, with meals ranging from nutritious hamburgers with secret sauce by Luke and the boys, to beef tacos, burrito bowls, and pasta dishes. Ultimately, Seren Chespy and Sophie Van Der Meer were crowned winners for their tofu stir fry. Their dish stood out for incorporating a broad range of ingredients from all five food groups, vibrant presentation, and exceptional flavour. Seren and Sophie also impressed the judging panel with their in-depth explanations of the functions of the nutrients in their meal.
Over in Ms Barnes’ class, a clear Spanish theme emerged, with students creating colourful burrito bowls, beef tacos, and grilled tortillas. A special mention goes to Amach Machar, whose dish was praised for the flavourful use of cooked capsicum and vibrant colours in her open taco. However, it was Edie Baard and Lucy Ferlazzo who took out the win with their skillet steak served with mushroom sauce and broccolini. Their meal was not only nutritious and distinctively different from others on the day, but they also demonstrated a strong understanding of the nutritional value of each ingredient and its importance to the human body.
As you can imagine, there was no shortage of volunteers to assist with judging. A big thank you to our panel of enthusiastic and knowledgeable judges: Mrs Stanton and Mrs Kelly (our Food Tech experts), along with Mr Evans, Mr Williams, Dr Keogh, and Mrs Reeman.
Congratulations to all students who participated! The event was a true celebration of creativity, teamwork, and nutritional knowledge—and a delicious one at that.

Year 11 Outdoor and Environmental Studies
On Friday 30th May our Year 11 OES students headed outdoors with Mr Williams to learn how to 'make bush tucker'. Damper was on the menu and one of our students even supplied home grown honey to add to the experience.
Year 10 VET Sport & Rec - First Aid Training
On Thursday June 5th, Year 10 VET Sport & Rec completed their First Aid and CPR training. Students participated with a positive attitude and learnt many new skills that will not only enhance their employability, but also equip them with the necessary skills should they find themselves in an emergency situation.

MSC Students Lead with Pride at Primary School Cross-Country Championships
On Wednesday, June 4th, thirteen of our dedicated MSC Cross-Country runners proudly represented our school at the Southern Peninsula and Northern Peninsula Division Primary School Cross-Country Championships.
For the past four years, our students have been invited to assist with this major event—and once again, they rose to the occasion with professionalism, energy, and unwavering commitment. Whether leading each race or supporting the younger participants from the back of the pack, our students demonstrated exceptional leadership, sportsmanship, and compassion.
Their contribution was not only noticed but deeply appreciated by event organisers and primary school staff alike. On behalf of myself and School Sport Victoria, thank you to all the students involved—you continue to do MSC proud!

New Staff Member
Hi, I’m Shani Hodson and I’m about to complete the final year of my Master of Education at Deakin University, where I’m also a mentor for Arts Education undergraduates.
After recently receiving my Permission to Teach grant, I’ve joined the Food Technology team here at MSC. While I’ll miss my lovely friends in Inclusion, I’m excited to be starting this new chapter.
This role feels like a full circle moment for me, as I originally trained to teach Design & Technology in the UK, before spending over 15 years working in the creative industries - both in the UK and here in Australia. I love everything Art, Design and Tech, and I’m excited to bring that passion into the classroom.
Outside of work, I enjoy running, hiking, the gym, and walks on the beach with our giant golden retriever, Eric Cantona Hodson - especially on the rare occasion when my almost grown-up babies join us!
I’m looking forward to meeting new faces.
