Year 1

What’s Happening in Year 1 in Weeks 9, 10 and 11

Wellbeing

In wellbeing, students are working across the cohort to collaborate and create ‘Golden Rules of Friendship’ and participate in activities all about friendship. Students have reflected on how their words and actions can affect others. We will use role plays to support students in developing skills to use in their friendships. Students have also welcomed a Year 1 Meeting Spot, located in the Year 1 area, where students can organise to meet their friends at recess or lunch time.

Literacy

Students will be working on:

  • Phonics: We will be learning about syllables and how to spell words with open and closed syllables. Students will also learn to read and spell compound words with two syllables. Students will spend time reviewing all concepts learnt this term.
  • As our phonics lessons teach new digraphs and diphthongs, sound pack cards will be added to the students’ reading pouches for practice at home
  • Reading Fluency: Reading with accuracy and appropriate rate
  • Handwriting: Correctly forming the letters c and s
  • Students will be continuing our weekend recount writing with a focus on using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops
  • Information reports will be the language and literature focus. Students will look at the structure of an information report and create an information report collaboratively as a class.

Maths

Students will be working on:

  • Place value: Reading and writing two digit and three-digit numbers, partitioning numbers and applying place value knowledge to solve problems
  • Data: Interpreting data and creating picture graphs

Knowledge Unit

Students will learn about:

  • First Nations families and culture
  • The importance of the ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ and it's significance
  • Explore how technology has changed over time
  • Final reflection celebrating everything that students have learnt in History this term

Library

The school library borrowing system is now up and running and students will be able to borrow one library book a week to take home. The Year 1 cohort go to the library on a Thursday. Please ensure they have their blue library satchel in their bag to keep their borrowed book protected when transporting it to and from school. This will help keep these books separate from their Classroom Library picture story book that they take home on a Monday.

Take Home Readers

Each week, your child will take three decodables home. We strongly encourage students to reread these texts multiple times across the week as this is an important way novice readers develop automaticity and reading fluency. In addition, students are bringing home one quality text from their classroom library each week. As novice readers, they will not necessarily be able to read these books independently. However, they will benefit a great deal from hearing these texts read out loud by an expert (you!). As our phonics lessons teach new digraphs and diphthongs, sound pack cards will be added to the students’ reading pouches for practice. Keep practicing the sound pack cards the students already have.

Mathletics

Your child now has their Mathletics code pasted into their Homework Diari. Activities have been set by the classroom teachers. Mathletics tasks will be set each Wednesday by your child's classroom teacher. Each week we will continue to set maths tasks for students to work through at their own pace, if desired. Completing these tasks is optional. We have been really excited to see students completing Mathletics tasks at home. These help to consolidate their understandings from the classroom.

Reminders

  • Fruit and veggie snack break: Please ensure that students are bringing their fruit and veggie snack in a container separate to their lunch box. This supports students in transitioning during fruit and veggie break time in the classroom.

  • Students are to bring in their reading pouch every Monday to swap their take home readers and classroom library book. It is really important students are completing their 20 minutes of nightly reading to support their reading progress. New readers are only sent home until the previous week’s books have been returned.

  • Could all families please check at home for any picture story books that may have come home as part of their take home reading on a Monday, that may have not yet been returned. They are labelled with a ‘Classroom Library’ sticker.

  • The Year 1 Team wish all families a fantastic school holiday break.
