Wellbeing & Culture

It’s all happening in the Indonesian Classroom this term!!

Sayembara Lisan

We are very proud to announce that we had two award winners in the Sayembara Lisan (Indonesian speaking competition) this year. Lucia Marvelley came equal 1st and Ayaana Deepesh Karanayil came 3rd in the Middle School section. The awards ceremony was held at Melbourne High on Friday the 11th of August. Lucia received her award there and Ayaana will receive hers upon her return.

Culture Club

Culture Club has resumed after a pause for Sayembara Lisan practice sessions. In Week 3, we met and put a few more countries into the hat to see us through Term 3. Culture Club this year is loosely based on the idea of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. Each week at the end of the session a student randomly selects the country for the following week. So far this term we have explored France (we made Eiffel Tower dot paintings), Indonesia (we made Indonesian shadow puppets) and Brazil (we practiced penalty shoot-out shots down on the soccer pitch). Next week we will participate in an activity related to Iran. If you child is interested in joining Culture Club we meet every Tuesday Recess in the Indonesian classroom.

Baguskan! Incursion

This Term in Indonesian, Middle School students are learning about 'Cerita Rakyat' (Traditional Cultural Stories). These stories include myths, legends, folktales and fairytales. We have been learning about a number of traditional stories during class time.  In Week 5 in Indonesian, all Junior and Middle School students have been learning the story of 'The Dancing Pig', which is the Balinese version of 'Hansel and Gretel' in preparation for the Middle School incursion today.  All Middle School students had the opportunity to watch an authentic Indonesian Shadow Puppet Show, learn either a dance or musical piece (played on traditional Indonesian Gamelan instruments) and to perform their piece to the Junior School students in Session 6.  This is a link to the story that was used during class time this week:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oVWxP52PXk

During class time students made predictions at different times during the story and at the end of the story we made connections to the known story of 'Hansel and Gretel'.
