Year 11 Incursion 'Batyr' - 10th August

Student reflection:

"On Thursday 10th August, our Year 11 cohort was lucky enough to have 'Batyr' come and speak to us. Their presentation was full of fun stories, good advice and engaging games.

'Batyr' is an organisation that focuses on the mental health of young people, through shared storytelling ensuring that everybody is heard and validated.

One of the main messages that I took away from the session was to stand up for your friends. Standing up for your friends doesn't need to be hard and can do something as simple as letting them know you're thinking about their well-being.

Overall, 'Batyr' was a great experience to help validate the youth about their mental health and teach us about ways we can care for each other. "

"Their acting and humour were really suitable for our age" Yvonne

"It was an important message that we should not give in to negative peer pressure"  Victoria

The actors were very impressed, not just with the respect shown by our students, but with their terrific energy and enthusiasm.

Book Week Incursion - 14th August

On the 14th of August, the Year 7 and Year 8 cohorts had the chance to meet Thai-Australian book writer, Oliver Phommavanh, who was presenting about his journey of how he became an author.

Not only is Oliver an author, but he also shared that he was a teacher and a world record breaker. So having him at Killester College was such an amazing experience.

There were a lot of laughs coming from all the students in the Theatrette. He told us that anyone can be a writer even with just the simplest idea in their head as inspiration.

Yr10 Italian Excursion to “IL Globo” an  Italian newspaper & Brunetti Classico Carlton - 22nd August

Buongiorno! On Tuesday 22 August, our Year 10 Italian class had the wonderful opportunity to visit the headquarters of “IL Globo”, an Italian community-based newspaper in Brunswick West. They learned about the history and origins of the Italian newspaper and met and spoke to the Vice editor-in-chief of Il Globo and La Fiamma (a Sydney-based Italian newspaper), Marco Patavino. They also had an informative talk from Raymond Lawrence, a journalist, who is in charge of the English website and runs their Instagram and Twitter (now X) accounts for IL Globo. The students also visited the television and radio studios where programs are conducted and recorded in Italian for IL Globo TV and Rete Italia radio.

IL Globo started back in 1959 and catered to the large number of post-World War II Italian migrants in Australia,  by keeping them connected to news from their homeland Italy, internationally as well as locally and in Australia, in the Italian language.

Today, IL Globo is a biweekly newspaper that is issued every Monday and Thursday and includes news from Italy, Australia and the world, as well as community news from local Italian clubs and associations, sports results from Serie A, the major Soccer league in Italy, Australian sports reports as well as a 24-hour radio station called “Rete Italia”. IL Globo also includes regional Italian recipes, has a series of Podcasts in Italian about Italian art, culture and food as well as the “In Classe '' insert, which includes various activities, catering to primary and secondary students learning Italian.

In the afternoon the students then visited Brunetti Classico in Carlton where they shared in an Italian lunch and also had the wonderful opportunity to hear and learn about the history and origins of Brunetti Classico. Brunetti Classico dates back to 1956 by the Giorgio Angele family who are also post-World War II immigrants to Australia. Today Brunetti is still a family-run business and 93-year-old Giorgio occasionally visits and checks in whilst his son Fabio runs the family business. Brunetti is a popular social meeting place where one can also savour tasty Italian food, pizza, coffee and cakes.

All in all, the students had a great day by immersing themselves in Italian history and culture right here in the city of Melbourne where coffee culture was born.

Student Spotlight - Sally T

I was lucky enough to participate and perform in the workshops at Monash University’s Day of Woodwinds. While performing, the instructors would give me (and the other performers) feedback on the aspects of our playing, that could help us improve while we performed and how we learned music.

It was a great experience to meet and learn with other passionate musicians. It was a very chill day and I was able to make a lot of new connections with people who love what I love.

Wellsprings - 24th August

This organisation empowers women in the region in so many ways. If you are interested in joining any of their classes please go to their website.  Our students were again, great ambassadors for the school and assisted with bike lessons, language and computer skills and the creche.

Three brave volunteers got dirty in the garden doing some weeding and roped me into it with them.

We raised awareness and funds and it was again a massive effort and success. Thank you also to Ms Diletosso who cooked up breakfast for us. My hips are perhaps getting too old for this event!
