2024 Head Prefects and 'Working Holiday' for Year 12's!
Congratulations to our 2024 Head Prefects, who were announced at our School Assembly on the last day of term: Kalika Miliankos-King and Caeleigh Cornhill. Although their formal induction will happen later, their work will commence immediately as our current Head Prefects devote themselves to the final Year 12 VCE Sprint.
Earlier this year we hosted three pre-service teachers on their school placement as part of the Department's Teach Rural program.
This great video shows that program and showcases our school, staff and students. Enjoy!
As we approach the upcoming school holidays, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the significance of rest in our lives, particularly for our hardworking students. For our Year 12's this term break is more of a 'working holiday' as they head into the final leg of their secondary schooling and their VCE or VCE-VM. They are not at school each day, so there is time and space for rest, but their deeper rest comes in November after their final assessments are done. But for now, they need to balance some rest with revision and final school project and assessment work. A number will be meeting with staff over the break, as well as revising and working independently and in small groups.
Rest is not merely the absence of activity; it is a vital component of a healthy and balanced life. I would like to delve into the concept of rest, focusing on the seven types of rest principles and how they can benefit us all.
Physical Rest: Physical rest involves giving our bodies the opportunity to recover from the demands of daily life. Encourage your child to engage in activities that promote physical rest during the holidays, such as a good night's sleep, gentle exercises, and spending time outdoors. Be mindful that this time of the year is one of the most rewarding and comfortable times to be outside, as we likely head towards a very hot summer. Wangaratta is blessed with great parks, paths and sporting facilities. For me - being on the bike most days will be how I honour this type of rest.
Mental Rest: Mental rest is about giving our minds a break from constant stimulation. This break, suggest activities like reading a book, solving puzzles, or simply unplugging from digital devices to allow for mental rejuvenation. Almost all modern devices allow the tracking of 'screen time' - I encourage all young people to have a look at their habits and set some realistic goals for keeping their screen time realistic.
Emotional Rest: Emotional rest is essential for maintaining emotional well-being. Encourage open conversations with your child, provide a safe space for them to express their feelings, and consider engaging in relaxing activities together.
Social Rest: Social rest involves spending quality time with loved ones. The term break are a perfect opportunity for family bonding, nurturing relationships, and creating lasting memories. I am so looking forward to this aspect of rest myself.
Spiritual Rest: Spiritual rest centres around finding meaning and purpose in life. Encourage your child to explore their spiritual side, whether through meditation, nature walks, or simply reflecting on their beliefs.
Sensory Rest: Sensory rest involves giving our senses a break from overstimulation. Consider introducing your child to the serenity of nature, where they can experience the soothing effects of natural sights, sounds, and smells.
Creative Rest: Creative rest allows the mind to explore and create without pressure. Encourage your child to pursue hobbies or activities that bring them joy, whether it's painting, playing a musical instrument, or engaging in crafts.
By embracing these seven types of rest, we can help our students recharge, rejuvenate, and return to school with renewed energy and enthusiasm. It is my hope that this holiday break serves as an opportunity for all of us to prioritise rest and well-being.
I wish each and every one of you a restful and enjoyable Term 3 break - especially our wonderful staff team. Let us remember that rest is not a luxury but a necessity for a healthy, balanced life.
Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in nurturing our students.
