Spotlight: The Eden Project

A PiC Funded Project: The Eden Project Continues

Last term some students came to me quite distressed: ‘There’s no more Barrow!’. What they meant was that the garden at the front entrance had a large gold-planted T for Tamar, a green-planted M for Melaleuca, but a big patch of bare earth where there should be a large red-planted B.

Last week, students from Year 3 and 4 in the Eden Project dug into the compacted soil to remedy this problem. We marked out a large B using plain flour, and arranged some dwarf red-leafed Nandinas so that they were equally spaced around the shape. Students were very enthusiastic about digging the needed holes, planting the baby plants, and backfilling the holes until the job was complete. Barrow is back!

I talked with AJ about the Eden Project and our work that afternoon. “Our school houses for the carnivals are T, M, and B. We have plants out the front of the office and there’s a hedge for Tamar, a hedge for Melaleuca, and today we planted a hedge for Barrow.’

It is great to see students involved in this project developing physical skills, learning about planting, landscaping, and working in teams. I like it that they can stand back at the end of their sessions, look at their work, see that it is good, and watch it grow over time. Plants and people flourishing: that’s what the Eden Project is all about.

Our Parents in Community Association (PiC) is a team of dedicated people whose aim is to build a strong sense of community within the school, and provide support to school community families in need.

PiC also raises funds for projects in the school that the school budget doesn't normally cover and some examples of this are the Eden Project (above), Kinder playground, Middle school courtyard and seating in the Performing Arts Centre, and game space GAGA pit.

Meetings are held once a month at the school on Tuesday at 7.30pm in the staffroom and parents are most welcome to attend.
