Making volcanoes in Kinder - See below for more!

Grade Two Unit of Inquiry – Materials

Our Inquiry into the properties of materials and the physical changes that they go through is coming to an end this week. Students have experienced a variety of learning opportunities this term including:

  • conducting science experiments into folding paper and melting ice.
  • responding to a puppet show of The Three Little Pigs, a narrative that we discovered was about choosing the best material for a purpose, as well as showing perseverance and compassion.
  • researching a topic related to materials and completing an information report to communicate their understanding to others.
  • sharing objects with a variety of properties and purposes during Show and Tell.
  • using the properties of foil and paper to create beautiful artworks with textas and water. During this activity, students also practised their handwriting by tracing our class Bible verses for the term, which are helping us to learn about compassion.

In our final activity, we will be making physical changes to plasticine to create creature characters, as we think about words such as “scrunch”, “twist”, “tear” and “roll”.

Our Unit of Inquiry studies encourage students to engage deeply with concepts and make connections across curriculum areas, exploring and expressing their understanding in many different ways. We also have lots of fun making new discoveries!

Kinder Volcanoes

Our Kinder students made volcanoes during Science Week, to support their individual inquiry. The students loved learning how to build a paper mâché volcano and they could not wait to watch it erupt as Mrs Kean combined ingredients that caused an eruption.
