The 17th August, is an extremely significant date for Indonesia. It was on this date in 1945 that Indonesia finally declared independence after 350 years of Dutch Colonial rule.

Each year on that date the Indonesian Language teachers like to help celebrate “Hari Kemerdekaan Indonesia (Indonesian Independence Day) with their language classes. Pak Campbell and Ibu Sonya had fun with their students with a keenly contested Lomba Makan Donut (donut eating competition). Traditionally the Indonesians would use a Kerupuk (specially flavoured crackers) but sadly due to lack of local availability in Hobart, donuts were the next best option to string up.

Bradley and Lander (Grade 6 de Lacy) competed in a donut eating competition in celebration of Indonesian Independence Day.

Grade 9 results:

Will and George progressed to the Grand Final, where George was declared class donut-eating champion! Congratulations George, a huge mouth can sometimes be an asset!! Many thanks to Andie and Lucy for your capable pole-holding efforts.

Grade 10 results:

Jonah defeated Jenna and Theo in round 1. Chris was narrowly beaten by Hyland in round 2. Thanks to Yana and Amy for valiantly holding the pole aloft.

The Grade 1 Indonesian class celebrated with a more creative flair, producing Indonesian flag-coloured fans. It’s not unusual to see many Indonesian people doing something similar with their children’s bicycles where, after being decorated in the colours of red and white , they would join together in a local parade.

Our local “chef” in residence, Pak Campbell, created a tasty Sumatran local recipe of Nasi Goreng with his Grade 9 students. The recipe was sent from Pak Agustinus, Fabio's father. The overall consensus was that it was well received by the class with a few going back for seconds.

The Grade 8 Indonesian class with Ibu Tracy continued to learn about Indonesian schools and continued their vocabulary practice with a few student-centred learning games.
