CURRICULUM FOCUS

In Mathematics this week, we are continuing our development of multiplication strategies of grid and lattice methods to problem solve.

VOCABULARY

Multiplication: The process of multiplying one number by another number to get a larger number.

For example: 5 x 3 = 15

Grid method: A written multiplication strategy where the numbers are partitioned into their place value (tens and ones) and then placed into a grid. Both of the numbers on top are multiplied by each of the numbers on the side, and then added together to get the product (total).

300+40=340

60+8=68

340+68=408

Lattice method: A written multiplication strategy where the numbers to be multiplied are written at the top of and to the right of a grid with diagonal lines. Both of the numbers on top are multiplied by each of the numbers on the side, and the numbers are recorded in the grid. The numbers in between the diagonal lines are added to each other and the product (total) is written outside the grid.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Have your child solve some multiplication problems using both the grid and lattice methods. They could generate their numbers using a dice from a board game, playing cards, dominos, or by choosing their own. Have them work at their ability level, them move on from there once they are comfortable.

Example: start by doing 1 x 2 digit multiplication, then move on to 2 x 2 digit, then 2 x 3 digit etc.
