STEM

Check out the information below to learn about what we will get up to in STEM for Term 2!
Prep:
Our Prep students are being introduced to the Design Thinking Process through a variety of hands-on experiences. They’ll learn how to identify problems and brainstorm creative solutions, experimenting with different materials to influence their designs. Students will also explore ways to join materials and use simple tools safely as they bring their ideas to life. Throughout the term, they’ll be guided to sequence each step of the design process to help them understand how ideas become real-world solutions.
Grades 1 and 2:
Students in Grades 1 and 2 will engage in a series of mini design challenges to explore the Design Thinking Process in action. This term, our focus is on materials—students will test and compare different materials, then justify their design choices to peers. They’ll practise planning the steps involved in making their designs, manage their time and resources, and use tools safely and responsibly to construct their solutions.
Grades 3 and 4:
In Grades 3 and 4, students are exploring how the properties of materials impact the function and sustainability of their designs. This term, they’ll design and develop their own biodegradable board games. As part of this process, students will sequence the steps needed to bring their ideas to life, while learning about the environmental impact of different materials and how to make responsible, informed design decisions.
Grades 5 and 6:
Our senior students are diving into collaborative project work, developing detailed plans to create designed solutions that consider team strengths and available resources. They’re investigating the characteristics and properties of materials, tools, and components—and how these influence the final product. Building on this knowledge, students will analyse a variety of existing board games and design their own biodegradable versions, with a strong focus on sustainability and environmental impact.
I can’t wait to see the curiosity and enthusiasm our students bring to STEM this term! 🚀🔬🌱
