VCE VM – APPLIED LEARNING IN ACTION: making everyday count!

SENIOR FORMAL

On Friday, 16th May, our senior students traded their school uniforms for elegant gowns and sharp suits to celebrate the long-awaited Senior School Formal. Sandhurst Club was transformed into a formal space, setting the perfect scene for an unforgettable evening. From the very first notes of the DJ’s playlist, the dance floor came alive with laughter, energy, and amazing moves. Guests couldn’t resist capturing memories at the photo booth, complete with fun props and a backdrop worthy of the red carpet, where Cameron W. and Emma M. were crowned the evening’s “Couple of the Night.” Meanwhile, Demetri S. turned heads and claimed the coveted “Most Drippy” award for his effortlessly stylish ensemble. Between dances, everyone raved about the buffet spread: gourmet sliders, spring rolls, and many other savoury bites, and just when they thought the night couldn’t get any sweeter, they discovered the lolly table, scooping up bags. It was a night filled with joy, friendship, and memories to last a lifetime, a true celebration of our seniors as they step towards Semester 2.

YEAR 11 BUDDY PROGRAM

As part of Unit 1 Personal Development Skills (PDS), students explored the topic of Healthy Individuals, focusing specifically on gaining knowledge and skills related to mental health issues that affect young people. Through discussions, research, and class activities, students developed a deeper understanding of common challenges faced by their peers andthe importance of early intervention, empathy, and connection. In response to their learning, students participated in the Buddy Program, a meaningful initiative that involved spending time with Year 7 students to build positive and supportive relationships. They thoughtfully designed engaging activities tailored to the interests and needs of their buddies, aiming to foster trust, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Throughout the program, students regularly reflected on their experiences, evaluated thesuccess of their activities, and identified ways to improve their approach. This allowed them to not only apply what they had learned in a real-world context but also grow personally and emotionally through the process. The Buddy Program proved to be a rewarding and enriching experience for everyone involved. It strengthened cross-year level connections, supported the wellbeing of our younger students, and highlighted the value of kindness, leadership, and active listening in promoting mental health and resilience.

WINDANA DRUG AND ALCOHOL WORKSHOP

Week 1, Year 11 VCE VM students participated in a workshop delivered by Windana, focusing on drug and alcohol addiction. At times, you could hear a pin drop as students listened intently to the presenters’ powerful real-life stories of overcoming addiction. The presentation was highly engaging and impactful, reinforcing the importance of continuing to provide accessible wellbeing resources and ongoing support for all students.

VCAFE

In Term 1, the VCAFE generated a total of $408.50 in sales through the hard work and dedication of our Year 11 and 12 students. This initiative forms a vital part of the VCE Vocational Major (VM) program, offering students real-life, hands-on experience in allaspects of hospitality. From customer service, hygiene standards, and teamwork, students are actively involved inevery step of the VCAFEs operation. The VCAFE not only supports the development of essential employability skills but also builds confidence, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility. This authentic learning environment helps students connect classroom knowledge with industry expectations, preparing them for pathways in hospitality, business, or further vocational training. The success of Term 1 reflects both the effort of the students and the strength of applied learning in action.

TEAMWORK AND LEADERSHIP

During PDS, students have been actively engaged in a unit focused on teamwork and leadership. They explored various leadership styles, developed an understanding of their own leadership approach, and reflected on their strengths and areas for growth as team members. While the unit involved learning key theoretical knowledge, it was also reinforced through engaging, hands-on activities. Students participated in team-building challenges such as the“Human Knot” and the “Tallest Tower” competition, using only spaghetti and marshmallows. These activities not only strengthened their collaboration and communication skills but also brought energy and fun to the classroom. All the knowledge and skills developed throughout the unit will soon be put to the test in the upcoming ‘Big Debate’:“The VCE VM pathway better prepares individuals for a more successful future than the traditional VCE pathway.”This debate will give students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, and communication, key skills that underpin the PDS curriculum and are essential for future success.

YEAR 12 CAREERS EXPO

On Thursday, 22nd May, the Year 12 VCE VM students demonstrated outstanding initiative and professionalism as they hosted the 2025 Annual Career Expo in the Performing ArtsCentre (PAC). The event was the culmination of weeks of research, planning, and preparation as part of their Work-Related Skills (WRS) curriculum. A wide range of industries were represented at the expo, including Rail, Early Childhood Education, Hospitality, Paramedicine, Interior Design, Building and Construction, Real Estate, and Animal and Environmental Conservation. Each student was tasked with

researching their chosen industry in depth, and their displays reflected a high level of effort, creativity, and attention to detail. Students showcased key information about their industries, including current and projected industry growth, employment opportunities, required training and qualifications, pathways into the field, average salaries, and the types of tools or equipment commonly used. A key feature of the expo was the analysis of how artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting and transforming each sector, prompting thoughtful discussions about the future of work. The expo provided an engaging and informative experience for students, staff, and visitors alike. It not only allowed the Year 12 students to demonstrate their research and communication skills but also served as a valuable learning opportunity for younger students exploring future career pathways. Congratulations to all students involved for their professionalism, enthusiasm, and dedication to making the 2025 Career Expo a huge success.

VCE VM GOALS

Raise Expectations, Embrace Change, Tackle Challenges, and Think Big

It’s Hover Time!

The Year 12 VCE VM Numeracy classes have been absolutely 10 out of 10 for effort as they’ve worked hard to achieve their learning goals. Over the past few weeks, students have been researching, designing, and constructing their own hovercrafts as part of their Numeracy assignment—and today was the day they finally got to put them to the test!

Held in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC), the session was full of energy as students watched their hovercrafts in action through a series of hands-on trials, including:

  • Does it Hover? – Testing if the design achieves lift
  • Best Hover with a Push – Observing glide performance
  • Bowling Accuracy Test – Assessing control and direction
  • Weight Test – Seeing how much load their hovercraft can carry

It was an engaging and practical demonstration of applied numeracy, problem solving, and teamwork. Well done to all students for bringing innovation, curiosity, and a great attitude to the challenge!
