Art

Hugo 4

This term all of the students have been investigating the Art element of texture which refers to how to how an object feels when you touch the surface (actual) or the illusion of texture created through visual techniques eg. brushstrokes, patterns or shading (implied). Each year level has had completed different projects to demonstrate their understanding of texture, some have used real texture in their art, and others have drawn texture.

The Year 1 and 2 students used a variety of different materials to create a texture hamburger. Some materials were rough like straw and hessian, some were bumpy were cardboard and others were soft like wool and ribbon. The students went ‘shopping’ at the Texture Shop to collect a variety of different textures to put in their burger. Perhaps a red piece of felt could be a slice of tomato, or a yellow ribbon could be the mustard?

After collecting all the texture ingredients, the students used Supertac and PVA to glue them between their burger buns, cutting the into shape and trying to keep them in separate layers, just like in a real burger! Don’t they look delicious!

The Grade 3 and students were looking at different texture patterns used for drawing eg. scales look like a row of curved ‘u’ or to make a bunny look fluffy you would draw lots of short marks for the fur. The students learnt a new skill called ‘embossing’, using a special aluminium foil where lines can be engraved or ‘embossed’ into it. First, they embossed a simple design such as a sun setting over the waves, and within each section they demonstrated their knowledge of texture patterns by embossing these lines into the foil. Colour was added with permanent marker to provide a contrast with the black frame and the surface of the foil also created a very interesting texture which the students could feel.
