Student Learning & Growth

Celebrating Term 1, Looking Ahead to Term 2
Forming Strong Foundations
As Term 1 drew to a close before Easter, it was a timely moment to reflect on the many positive learning experiences that have shaped the beginning of the year at Marist-Sion College. The start of a school year always brings a sense of renewal and possibility, and it has been wonderful to witness students and staff settling into their classes, forming meaningful relationships, and engaging deeply with their learning.
I’ve particularly enjoyed being in classrooms across English Language, Drama, and Food Technology—sharing in the enthusiasm and focus of our students as they tackle new ideas and develop new skills. It’s a joy to see learning come alive in such varied and vibrant ways.
A central focus for Term 1 was the establishment of positive and productive relationships within our classrooms. We know that when students feel connected, respected, and supported, they are far more likely to thrive—both academically and personally. Our teachers have approached this with great care, working intentionally to create inclusive and respectful environments where every student is known, valued, and encouraged to reach their potential. Through collaborative tasks, goal-setting sessions, and pastoral conversations, these strong foundations are already bearing fruit.
NAPLAN – A Snapshot of Progress
Also in Term 1, our Year 7 and Year 9 students completed the NAPLAN assessments. While NAPLAN offers just one perspective on student progress, it provides useful data to guide learning and inform future teaching. I would like to commend our students on the calm and mature way they approached the testing period. I also thank our dedicated staff for their careful planning and support, ensuring the process ran smoothly and with student wellbeing front of mind. As always, we remind families that NAPLAN results are only one part of a broader picture of student achievement and growth.
Looking to Term 2
As we turn our attention to Term 2, several important events and opportunities lie ahead. Students and families are invited to participate in Parent-Teacher Interviews—an essential opportunity to celebrate successes, clarify learning goals, and strengthen the partnership between home and school. We warmly encourage all families to take part in these important conversations.
Subject selection for students entering Years 9 to 12 in 2026 will also begin during Term 2. This is an exciting and sometimes challenging process, as students begin to consider their passions, strengths, and possible future pathways. The College will offer a range of supports to guide this journey, including information sessions and individual guidance from key staff.
Finally, the term will culminate in a series of important assessments across all year levels. These tasks provide students with a valuable opportunity to demonstrate their understanding, reflect on their progress, and set new learning goals, ready to tackle Semester 2.
I’d like to congratulate our students, families, and staff on a positive and purposeful start to the year. May Term 2 be one of continued growth, learning, and connection.
