Dear Parents and Families

Last week, on the evening of Thursday 15 May, a broad range of local and state Education and Training organisations were invited to present at a Careers EXPO in our MP Hall at the Ulverstone Campus as part of National Careers Week.  It was a privilege to have representatives of 20 providers, volunteer their time to discuss future pathways with our school families. I was once again humbled to work with people who are willing to give up their time to serve our community.

The EXPO was attended by 25 families from Leighland and associated schools who were able to have quality conversations about pathways into industries of interest, and gather information on qualifications for consideration. Alyssia Moolenshot of the West North-West Careers HUB presented some data on current local occupation demand projections to assist families with future decision-making and subject selection. She also emphasised the importance of a well written resume and cover letter in order to make a successful transition to work. Alyssia offers a service called 'Upturned' where she works in schools to assist students to learn and understand the job application process and has offered to work with our students on request.

A big thank you to the families and students who availed themselves of this valuable career education opportunity and to those who helped cater for the evening.

School based Traineeships

We have several students settling well into various School based Apprenticeship and Traineeship arrangements which are proving to be a welcome addition to school participation.

Internally, there are four students working within the school toward qualifications in Screen & Media, Education Support and Cookery. Each are employed for one day each week and attend classes as per usual for four days per week. They really value the work and training opportunity this provides.

Externally, another four Year 10 students have secured School based Traineeships with local companies where they have 1-2  days at work and 3-4 days at school. Qualification areas are Baking,  Business Administration, Automotive and Cookery. School attendance is an essential component of the contract alongside work times. If you would like to discuss possible School based arrangements, please phone to make an appointment with  me.
