VCE- VM: REAL-WORLD LEARNING IN THE HEART OF MELBOURNE

By Zack Grace (Secondary Teacher)

To start the term off, both the Year 11 and 12 VCE-VM classes made their own way into the city to participate in two activities. Firstly, they had a tour of Victoria's Parliament House, and secondly an information session on youth homelessness with Melbourne City Mission's FrontYard service.

Both of these activities related to their studies in VM, including personal development skills, civic numeracy and financial numeracy. Said in another way, they witnessed how their part in society can impact the wider community, through actions such as voting, giving, working and caring for the people around them. They found the day impacting and left with a feeling of gratitude for the opportunities ahead.

BELGRAVE BOMBERS TAKE THE LEAD IN STATEWIDE HPV CHAMPIONSHIP!

By Glenn Booth (Secondary Teacher)

On Saturday, May 3, our Year 11 VCE VM students will be entering Round 2 of the Vic HPV Series. A HPV is a human powered vehicle, and teams from across Victoria compete for the state championship in an intense 6–8 hour race of flat-out pedalling, pushing themselves to complete as many laps as possible in the time limit.

In Race 1, our team—the Belgrave Bombers—battled through temperatures above 35 degrees in a gruelling seven-hour race, finishing on the exact same lap as our closest competitor. In a dramatic finish, we crossed the line first in our category, which means we are currently leading the state championship after Race 1.

Our team did an incredible job all day in very tough conditions and worked well as a team. They made decisions on who should ride when and how long for, helping each other in and out of the vehicle in the pit changes and monitoring each rider's progress to make race strategy decisions.

To prepare for the events, students worked in teams on several tasks: improving the vehicle and ensuring it ran smoothly, making necessary modifications, creating a team name, designing both the vehicle and team t-shirts, capturing photos and videos of training and competition, developing a training plan, and organizing the race rider order.

Students also design a menu and cook for the team prior to and on the day. This forms the main project we complete for their personal development subject in the VCE VM year 11 space.

We are looking forward to the remaining races throughout the year and are preparing to take on the rest of the field in the Vic State Champs.

A SPECIAL READING SESSION

By Anita Little (Discovery Centre Manager)

Eager whispers filled the Discovery Centre as the Prep students entered in pairs. They were welcomed by Year 12s, who had carefully selected picture story books to capture the younger students' imaginations. The Preps listened with delight to the expressive voices and animated gestures which brought the stories to life. This special reading session not only fostered a love of reading but also strengthened our sense of community within the school, as the Year 12s served as positive role models for their younger peers.
