Welcome to Term 2
Hey Year 6 Families,
A big welcome back to all students and families! What an exciting term ahead we have with lots of special events. Camp is coming up in week 7, we have an excursion in week 4, plenty of sport, and many opportunities for students to develop their learning.
We begin the Transition process for moving to Secondary School and will be sending home additional information about this throughout the term.
We have no doubt that it’s going to be a fantastic term and look forward to sharing it with you.

Teaching and Learning
Reading
In Reading this term, students will explore a variety of texts and themes related to our Humanities unit on immigration through rich discussions, vocabulary building and comprehension activities.
Every student will also be involved in Book Clubs, reading a shared novel with a group of students. Each week the groups will unpack their novel and build their reading and comprehension skills.
Writing
Our focus genre for Term 2 is information reports. Over the term we will develop our skills to create a report on an Asian country. We will be up-levelling vocabulary, spelling and improving sentence structure through free choice writing and Spelling sessions.
Speaking & Listening
Students will be supported to develop their discussion skills with a focus on language choice (appropriate to audience & context) and voice. Additionally, questioning and justifying points of view will be encouraged through class conundrums.
Mathematics
In Maths this term, our Grade 6 students will explore a variety of written and mental strategies to solve problems across key areas of the curriculum. They will engage with tasks at their individual point of need, and will be supported to build confidence and independence when tackling more complex challenges. Learning will be hands-on and collaborative, with a focus on developing deep understanding through rich and engaging problem-solving opportunities.
This term’s topics include:
- Fractions & Decimals
- 3D Shapes
- Probability
- Number Patterns
Humanities
'What impact has migration had on Australia?’ is our Term 2 Big Question for Humanities in Grade 6. We focus on the migration history of Australia, looking at where we have come from (with a particular focus on Asian countries); How war has affected migration through history (and continues to do so); How we don’t make judgements about others due to their appearance, culture, beliefs etc; and how the media portrays migrants. We'd love to have family members who have immigrated to Australia come and speak about their experiences, so please reach out to your classroom teacher if you'd be interested in coming to speak with the kids.
Wellbeing
In Year 6 we maintain an emphasis on the promotion of our school values through weekly wellbeing lessons and discussions. During this phase of tremendous growth and change for our students, wellbeing is at the fore. We regularly take time to celebrate our successes and share our thoughts to keep our classroom a happy,
caring and safe learning environment. This term we’re developing the skills needed for RESPECT by exploring themes and scenarios revolving around respectful relationships.
CEPS VALUES
COURTESY RESPECT CO-OPERATION RESPONSIBILITY
Friday afternoon assembly awards will be given to children who have shown personal growth specific to the school's values. To further support the school values, CEPS follows a SWPBS framework, which we refer to as CEPS Positive Behaviours Support. This framework encourages acknowledging positive behaviours displayed by students within the school.
Your child may receive a CEPS raffle ticket for displaying the expected positive behaviours! Award winners will be drawn and announced during assembly on Friday afternoons.
Supporting Learning from Home
Homework
In Year 6, our aim is to help students build independent study techniques in preparation for their further education. Students are expected to read at home for a minimum of 10 minutes per day, which counts towards the 120 minutes of homework per week (CEPS Homework Policy).
Every month, students will be given a selection of homework tasks to choose from. They are expected to complete one of these research activities per week and then publish them in their homework books by 9.00am every Friday.
In addition, Mathletics is available and encouraged to be used for at least 30 minutes per week.
To reinforce what they are learning in the classroom, some additional tasks may be set for the students to complete. All homework tasks will be given out on Friday and due the following Friday.
Term 2 Additional Information
Headphones
We have some spare headphones in our classrooms but if your child would prefer to bring their own set of ear/headphones, please ensure that you label them. Please note that Bluetooth headphones are not compatible with our school devices.
Phones and Devices
In accordance with the Department of Education policy, student phones that are brought to school must be switched off and handed to the teacher to be stored securely during the day. Students will not have access to these phones until 3:30 pm.
Social Media
Please communicate regularly with your child about social media and their online use as these can often lead to social issues that carry on into school. A reminder that most social media apps currently have a minimum age restriction of at least 13 years old with the government policy to ban under 16s accessing social media coming into effect at the end of this year.
Lunch/Snacks
When preparing your child’s lunchbox, please avoid nuts and nut products as we have children with allergies within the year level and across the school. Fruit break items should be able to grab and go. Thank you
Communication
Sentral
All notes, messages and information will be located on Sentral. Here you'll find info about excursions, incursions, camps, special food days, permission slips, calendar updates, newsletters and plenty more things that you will need.
Dojo
Individual messages to and from the classroom teacher for non-urgent or informal communication. Photo updates of various events will be posted to the class story.
Phone
For any time sensitive or urgent messages, please contact the front office by phone as we may not see a Dojo message during the school day.
