Year One/Two News

It has been a very positive start to Term Two in the Millie Building. Students have settled in well and have enjoyed sharing about their wonderful holidays!

So far, we have enjoyed learning about ANZAC Day, making poppies and going to our school ANZAC Day service last Thursday. We have also began learning some addition and subtraction strategies in Maths such as counting on. Plus, we have learnt about verbs, nouns and some new phonemes (sounds) including /ow/ and /ai/ within the InitiaLit program.

In Humanities, we are beginning our new unit on Geography. This week, we are going to be exploring special items the students have that helps identify their family’s history. This will then lead us in to discussing Geography and different areas around the world and particularly, in Australia. Please enjoy some photos of the students with these items below:

This term, we are beginning our ‘Tricky Word Practice Laps’ as part of the InitiaLit program. This gives students an opportunity to read ‘tricky words’ also known as non-decodable high-frequency words. Students have been given a page to practice the sets of words along with their home reader.

Some important reminders:

  • We are seeking parent volunteers who may be able to spare an hour a week to help in the classrooms. Please speak to your child's classroom teacher if you are interested. Please note, a valid Working With Children's check is required.
  • Please remember to fill out diaries with any book students are reading at home to ensure teachers can keep track of what students are reading.
  • As the weather is beginning to cool off, please ensure students have a named jumper and/or jacket with them. A reminder that jackets are not to be worn in classrooms, only outside.
