Year 7 Boys Baseball Report
On a very sunny Wednesday 18th October, our Year 7 Baseball team travelled a short distance to the East Belmont Saints Baseball club in Waurn Ponds. It was the first time playing baseball for many of the team, so our experienced leader in Flynn Scargill was inspirational in his directing and organizing of each players role throughout the whole day.
We began with a 70-minute match against North Geelong, and found ourselves down 1-3 after the first innings. Our boys picked up the skills and tactics very quickly though and we scored the maximum of 7 runs in our second innings, especially thanks to some sound base sneaking skills by Ethan Pearce and Zane Fleming, and a very nice slide to home base by Dylan Petrie. North Geelong could only manage 2 home in their second innings so we took the win with the 8-3 result.
After a long wait in-between matches, the team was very pumped to play Northern Bay, with the winner to be titled the champion for the day. It was tight again after the first innings with Belmont having a narrow 3-2 lead, but then another maximum 7 runners home in the second innings sealed the game for us with some great hits by Leo Armistead, Eddie Muhlenberg, Jude White and Aiden Maher. Some clutch pitching by Flynn and catching by Tom Armistead prevented Northern Bay from scoring more than 1 home so the final result was 8-3.
The boys will now compete at the next stage and should be proud of their efforts!
Year 8 Baseball Report
Our Year 8 Boys Baseball team represented Belmont HS on Monday 23rd October. We had a large team of 13 participants so quickly working out how we were going to rotate fielding/batting etc was our first priority!
The first match was against Surf Coast SC and it was tight after the first innings with Belmont having a slight 2-0 lead. Some terrific pitching by Gus Sutton with Felix Gardiner catching kept SCSC to just one run after two innings and then our boys batted very strategically to score the maximum 5 home for the innings and take a 7-1 lead. Scott Kwon then sealed the game with some quick strike-outs in the third innings and we ended up not needing to bat again and took a 7-4 win.
Our next game seen the boys work really well together both on and off the field with the support at fever pitch. They were much cleaner in the field this innings and sealed a 6-0 win. Brandon McDowall was virtually unplayable as our pitcher for this match and Gus was very clean as catcher.
We had an hour break before our final against Oberon HS, and the boys came out firing. Brandon quickly whipped through their lineup again and then we were able to get 2 home in our innings before a quick slip up meant we didn’t capitalize on having bases loaded. This didn’t happen in the second innings as we took our chances and made the 5 max home again and had an unassailable lead of 7-1 with one innings to go. Some clutch fielding by Eddie Harrison ensured we had won the game, and also the championship for the day.
The team did a great job of gelling together and will be pumped to take on the next stage on the 3rd November!
