Reading and Viewing

This term in Reading, our Year One students will continue developing their Literacy skills and confidence as a reader through a series of enriching learning experiences. To begin with, they will immerse themselves in the world of procedural texts, where they will closely examine the essential features of procedures. By following step-by-step instructions, students will not only gain insights into the structure of these texts, but also sharpen their comprehension skills. Additionally, students will delve into the exciting realm of poetry. Through exploring poems and rhymes, our readers will uncover the artistry behind author's purpose, the rhythmic rhythm of words, and the emotional depth that poetry can evoke.

Students will maintain their active engagement with the whole-school CAFE program as they continue their personal learning journey toward becoming proficient readers. This comprehensive program places a strong emphasis on the four essential pillars of reading: Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. Students will select individualised CAFE goals that they will work on throughout Reading lessons, applying their goal to the lesson focus. They will be supported through one-on-one conferences, explicit teaching of helpful strategies and weekly sustained reading sessions, where students will continue consolidating their skills.

As we near the end of the year, we are excited to offer our students a series of engaging learning opportunities that will not only enrich their reading skills but also set a strong foundation for their journey into Year 2. We look forward to celebrating their growth and achievements as we continue to inspire a love for reading that will accompany them on their educational path.

To support your child’s Reading and Viewing skills at home, you could:

Read your child’s take-home reader with them everyday for at least 20 minutes and ask them questions about the text to strengthen their comprehension capabilities. For example:

  • What was the story about?
  • Why do you think the author wrote this book?
  • What could happen next?
  • If you changed the ending to add a twist, what would it be?
  • How do you think this character felt; why?
  • Utilise ‘Reading Eggs’ as a resource at home, which contains a variety of texts, lessons and videos to build vocabulary, reading fluency and inferencing skills. Login details have been glued into your child’s reader diary. If you are unsure of your child’s login details, please contact their teacher.
  • Read a range of Procedural texts at home, including recipes and instructions for games and manuals, and follow the steps together.
  • Visit the local library and borrow different poetry books. Discuss the ideas, emotions, and images that the poems enable the reader to visualise in their mind.
