SCHOOL OF INNOVATION

School of Innovation

Welcome to Term 4!

We are looking forward to another exciting and action packed term! We hope our students, staff and families have had a restful and rejuvenating break and look forward to all of the wonderful learning experiences and adventures Term 4 entails. We are looking forward to sharing with you the amazing work and learning that is undertaken and experienced by our School of Innovation students this term.

Class Resources

We understand as we are embarking on Term 4 that sometimes our resources such as folders, books and pens can be a little worse for wear. It is important that we continue to care for our resources and ensure we take all required items to class to best assist us with engaging in our learning. If an item has been damaged or lost, it will need to be replaced so we can continue to undertake our best learning in Term 4 as we complete the year.

This also includes our iPads! Please ensure that any damage is reported to Pastoral Group Leaders and IT staff to ensure that it can be rectified as soon as possible. iPads must be fully charged each day and it is encouraged that we adopt good habits to assist us with this.

Term 4 Uniform Update

It is that time of year again where the sun is shining and our students are required to wear their school hats as part of the term 4 uniform. As we are a Sun Smart School it is vitally important that the students within the School of Innovation are able to role model this behaviour to our younger students within the School of Wonder. This is essential to ensure that all of the students at the College are protected from the damage the sun can cause during the Spring and Summer months. If your student requires a hat they will be able to purchase one from the school uniform shop.

Year 8 & 9 Camp

This term within the School of Innovation both the Year 8 and 9 students will be participating within their annual school camp. The Year 8 students will be leaving in week 3 to attend Feathertop Chalet in Harrietville. Whilst the Year 9’s will be traveling to Waratah Beach Camp in Waratah Bay. Both camps will provide the students with fantastic opportunities to deepen their current relationships with their peers and teachers. While allowing students to engage in activities outside of their day to day learning at school which enables students to test themselves in unfamiliar situations. These camps are a vital component of the learning experience which takes place at the College and we look forward to being able to report on the outcomes of these camps as they eventuate.

Year 5, 2024 Information Session

Thank you to those that attended our Second information session for our Year 5 program in 2024. Please note there will be upcoming days throughout the term where the 2024 Year 5 students will be engaging in “Discovery Days” to enter into the School of Innovation and be prepared for what their schooling will look like in 2024!

Thank you!

Rach Chapman and Callum Thompson (School of Innovation Leaders)

Year 9 Entrepreneurs in Action

Shrey and Milla are two of our wonderful Year 9 students that showed off their entrepreneurial skills during the Term 2 inquiry, Market Day!

Our Year 9s students worked in groups to plan and create a small business that sold various products and services. A portion of the profits raised from the Market were chosen by the students to fund the purchase of two GoPro action cameras and a whole heap of accessories. The intention of these cameras is to film camps, excursions, athletics and swimming carnivals, the annual staff vs students soccer game, classes, assessments, and much more!

The Year 9 students are still deciding what to spend the rest of their hard earned money on that will benefit the whole College community. Well done to our awesome Year 9's and a great initiative!

Year 7 Shadow Photography

Can you see a message in each of the shadow images?  Year 7 photography students harnessed their impressive creative skills on the last day of Term 3 with some very clever results.

Year 8 Art

In year 8 last term students practised mixing gouache paint in different tints and tones starting from a base colour of their choice. Students learnt about monochromatic colour and created a gem design using a visual stimulus.

Year 9

This term in Year 9 at St. Anne's sees students engage in an open inquiry into whatever field of choice they are interested in! This is known as the Endless Possibilities Project and is an exciting time for the Year 9s, as well as all members of the community that come together to support and further the learning of our eldest School of Innovation students. Our Inquirers are using their learning assets of Collaboration, Communication, Researching, Self-management, as well as Critical and Creative Thinking in order to drive their inquiries and create a unique product!

Welcoming Year 5 in 2024

Armed with learning assets and imbued with agency, this year’s cohort of Year 4 students are on the cusp of moving into the School of Innovation (SOI) in 2024.

Having spent five years within the flexible and engaging School of Wonder, connecting interests and passions to learning, next year’s inaugural Year 5 students will further develop and enhance their strategies, tools and techniques to investigate the world, posing questions as they research and thinking deeply about their discoveries.

On Tuesday, September 5 and Tuesday, October 3, St Anne’s College welcomed 2024's Year 5 families to an information session to find out about the vibrant and stimulating year ahead as well as meet the dedicated learning mentors and SOI leadership team in Rachelle Chapman and Callum Thompson.

Bringing together a wide range of experience as well as a firmly established spirit of collegiate collaboration, next year’s Year 5 learning mentors Andrea Bergamin and Ivy Davidson, were also pleased to meet and chat with families during the session.

You can find out more about the dedicated and passionate 2024, Year 5 learning mentors in their profiles below.

Ivy:

I started my teaching career in 2014 at St Augustine’s College Kyabram. I have taught Foundation, Years 3/4 and 5/6. It was when I was teaching in the 3/4 space that I met Andrea. We taught collaboratively and made a great team.

At my previous school, I was a leader in the digital technologies space. I am passionate about teaching our children to be learners of the 21st century. I believe it is vital that our children develop into critical and creative thinkers who understand how to use technology as a tool for their success.

I am so happy with my decision to continue my career here at St Anne’s and I am looking forward to developing positive relationships with our students going into Year 5 next year.

Andrea:

I started teaching at St Augustines in Kyabram where I worked in the 3/4 team for three years. I then moved to St Annes in 2021 where I taught 1/2 and then moved into the Grade 3 space and now back in 1/2.

I am really excited about teaching our first grade 5s next year and I feel very fortunate to know many children in Year 4, currently having taught them last year and the year before.

Important Pastoral Group Information

At St. Anne’s College, all students within the School of Innovation are allocated to a Pastoral Group. These groups are overseen by a Pastoral Group Leader and currently comprise students from their respective houses: Montessori, Charles, Cooper, and Majella houses.

Each morning, students commence their day within their Pastoral Groups. This time involves participation in morning prayer, a welcome to country, and updates about the day's news and events at the College. This period holds significance in allowing our students to establish strong connections with their peers and their Pastoral Leader. Consequently, our students are able to cultivate a strong sense of community at St. Anne’s College.

Our Pastoral Leaders also seize this opportunity to implement the three core principles of Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness (GEM), which stem from our school-wide program conducted by the Resilience Project. These principles encourage our students to contemplate and recognize the positive facets of their day-to-day experiences both at the College and at home. This practice ensures that our students embark on each day well-prepared for successful learning and meaningful connections with others.

Given that this session only spans 10 minutes each morning, it is imperative that students are punctual and actively participate within their designated Pastoral Groups. If students miss this period or arrive late, they will forfeit this crucial initiation to the school day.

We extend our gratitude to all parents and caregivers for your sustained support in ensuring that this routine is upheld for the continued success of our students.

Important Uniform Information

A reminder that all School of Innovation students are required to wear their academic uniform items each day, except for sports days or other nominated days when their sports uniform items can be worn. Please ensure your student is in their full academic uniform. If this is not possible on a particular day, please send a note, including the date your student will be able to be in full school uniform.

A dress code, in particular a uniform, provides a visual connection to identify students as members of St Anne’s College community. The way a uniform is worn makes a statement about our college and it represents the fact that the student is a part of the community.  The benefits of a school uniform include:

• Allows all students to feel equal

• Helps prevent bullying and competition on the basis of clothing

• Ensures students appearance reflects the expectations of St Anne’s College

• Enhances the profile and identity of the College and its students in the wider community

• Strengthens the spirit of community within St Anne’s College

• Enhances individual student safety and group security

• Ensured all students are dressed safely and appropriately for school activities

• Encourages students to develop pride in their appearance

• Prepares students for the expectations in workplaces

• Encourages students to present themselves appropriately for a particular role

Thank you for your support.
