5/6 CLASSROOM

English:
Our students have been working so hard to complete their information texts on Convict Settlement in Australia. It has been wonderful to see the effort they’ve put into writing strong introductions, interesting body paragraphs, and thoughtful conclusions. They’ve also been experimenting with rich vocabulary to make their ideas easy to understand and engaging for the reader. We’re so proud of their achievements and are excited to share some of their work with you!
Maths:
In Maths, our focus has been on developing a strong understanding of decimals. Students have been exploring rounding and estimating when adding and subtracting decimals, adding and subtracting using place value and partitioning, and applying the vertical algorithm for addition. They have worked with persistence and enthusiasm to extend their understanding, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence shine through in their work.
Inquiry:
As we come to the end of our Term 3 Inquiry unit, History of Australia, students have been exploring the fascinating story of our nation’s convict past. This learning has connected beautifully with our class novel Tom Appleby: Convict Boy, which has helped students see history through the eyes of a young character living in that time. The combination of factual research and storytelling has encouraged thoughtful discussions, sparked curiosity, and deepened students’ understanding of what life was like in early Australia. It has been wonderful to see the connections students are making between their reading, writing, and inquiry learning.
RE:
In Religion, our Year 5/6 students are exploring the importance and power of storytelling. Together, they are discussing why people tell stories, the different genres stories can take, and how even fictional tales can teach us real truths about life. Students are also reflecting on their own favourite stories and helping to create a collaborative Story Wall in the classroom. The unit is also introducing the Bible as a sacred collection of diverse texts that reveal God’s relationship with people. To honour its significance, students are helping to establish a special Bible display space in the classroom. This learning is laying the foundation for further exploration of different types of biblical texts throughout the term.
Buddy Time:
Our F/1/2 and Grade 5/6 buddies recently enjoyed a special activity together. It had been a little while since our last buddy session, which made students extra excited to see it back on the timetable. Buddies shared a picture story book before working together on a collaborative colouring activity. The room was filled with smiles, laughter, and wonderful teamwork as students reconnected and enjoyed their time together.
