🌟 Term 4 Preview: Exciting Times Ahead for Year 6! 🌟

Term 4 is always an exciting and busy time, filled with memorable events and important milestones for our Year 6 students. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up:

  • Sports Day: Many of our students will be proudly representing LPS at upcoming sporting events this term. It’s always wonderful to see them showcase their athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

  • Scrapbooking: Throughout the year, students have been writing and collecting pieces for their scrapbooks that capture moments from their primary school life. This term, they’ll be putting these together, adding photos, artwork, and stories to create a special keepsake. This creative project encourages students to reflect on their favourite memories and celebrate the friendships and learning experiences that have shaped their time here.

  • High School Transition Days: To help prepare students for the exciting changes ahead, transition days will provide opportunities to visit their new high schools, meet teachers and future classmates, and experience a taste of secondary school life. These days are designed to build confidence, answer questions, and help make the move as smooth and exciting as possible.

  • Graduation: Graduation is a very special occasion marking the end of the primary school journey. We’ll come together to celebrate the hard work, growth, and achievements of our Year 6 students with a meaningful ceremony. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students, families, and teachers to recognise this milestone before the adventure of high school begins.

Learning in Action

🧠 Word Work

In Word Work, we have explored the 'capt, 'ceit', 'ceive', 'cept' and 'cip' morphemes. Students have learnt about their Latin Etymology meaning to take/catch/hold and explored a range of prefixes and suffixes that alter the meaning.

🗣️ Vocabulary of the Week

As part of our Knowledge Rich unit, 'Immigration and International Interaction,' we have been exploring key terms that help us understand how countries connect and work together.

Alliance: when two or more countries agree to support and help each other.

Imports: products or materials bought from another country to use in your own country.

Exports: goods that are sold and sent to another country.

➗ Maths: Percentages

We've been exploring how to calculate percentage discounts of 10%, 25%, and 50%, skills that are especially useful when working out sale prices.

Students have been using a mix of mental strategies, written methods, and real-life scenarios to practise these skills. They’re learning to estimate, calculate, and clearly explain their thinking when tackling practical problems like:

  • If a shirt costs $40 and is 25% off, how much will I pay?
  • What’s the quickest way to find 10% of any number?
  • What is 30% of $70?
  • If a $120 jacket is 50% off, what’s the sale price?
  • A game originally cost $80 , how much will I save with 25% off, and what’s the new price?

These types of questions help students apply their knowledge of percentages to everyday financial decisions, thereby strengthening their numeracy skills in a meaningful way.

Through this learning, students are also deepening their understanding of how fractions, decimals, and percentages are all connected. In addition, they are building their ability to justify their thinking, compare different strategies, and check if their answers make sense, key steps toward becoming confident and capable mathematicians.

📊 Mathematics Preview:

In the coming weeks, students will continue to deepen their understanding of position and movement in Geometry, using the Cartesian coordinate system.

So far, we’ve worked on plotting points in the first quadrant and have begun using negative numbers on number lines. Next, we’ll take this learning further by exploring how to locate and plot points in all four quadrants of the Cartesian plane.

We’ll also be building on our understanding of transformations, including:

  • Translations: sliding shapes from one position to another
  • Reflections: flipping shapes across a line (mirror image)
  • Rotations: turning shapes around a point

These lessons are designed to help students develop strong spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills, essential foundations for higher-level maths in the years to come.

🌍 Knowledge Rich - Immigration and International Interaction🌏

In Year 6 this term, we are learning about how Australia is connected to the world through its geography, history, and people. By exploring different countries, migration stories, and the experiences of individuals, we’re discovering how these connections have shaped Australia's population, culture, and identity.

We’re diving into a wide range of activities to help us understand these big ideas. By the end of the unit, we will:

  •  Map the continents, Australia’s neighbouring countries, major world countries, Asian countries, and countries of some Indigenous peoples
  • Compare Indigenous populations from different parts of the world
  •  Explore the demographic, cultural, economic, political, and geographical features of major Asian countries
  •  Record key information about how Australia is connected with other countries
  •  Understand the difference between primary and secondary sources of information
  •  Learn that census data is a primary source, and learn how to navigate, record, and interpret this data
  • Investigate how Australia's population has changed over the last 20 years using census data
  • Create a timeline of migration to Australia, including key events that shaped the nation
  •  Identify where immigrants and refugees have come from
  •  Record population figures over time and display this data in a line graph
  • Compare and contrast two songs about Australia’s nationality from different time periods
  •  Use data from government websites to answer statistical questions
  •  Learn about the experiences of migrants and refugees through real-life stories

This unit helps us become more informed and thoughtful global citizens. It will be exciting to see how history, data, geography, and the stories of real people all connect to show how Australia became the diverse country it is today.

Stay tuned for more as we continue exploring Australia’s global connections!
