Learning in Action

📖 Literacy

This term during our Literature unit, we will be exploring the text The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. Throughout the unit, we will be focusing on:

  • Reading accurately and fluently using knowledge of text structures and language, and by monitoring comprehension to build meaning.

  • Evaluating the information and ideas in the text to demonstrate and support comprehension.

  • Identifying how the author makes the text exciting by using plot tension, character and setting.

  • Identifying and examining the effects of the author’s use of simile and imagery in the text

  • Identifying and examining the effects of the author’s use of rhetorical questions and repetition

  • Understanding the purpose of persuasion

  • Identifying the language features and persuasive devices that are commonly used to persuade a reader

  • Generating a list of persuasive points to use in a persuasive letter

Word Work

For Word Work, we will begin the term by decoding and spelling words with the Latin base spect-spec-spic, meaning to look.

Sentence Level Writing

During sentence-level writing, we will be looking at clauses within a sentence and how they can add descriptive quality to writing and vary the sentence structure, write complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions, and summarise the main idea in the text.

➗ Maths

We will begin by completing a Decimal unit. We will focus on:

  • Writing thousandths as a decimal format
  • Representing decimals on a number line
  • Renaming numbers with decimals
  • Comparing numbers with decimals
  • Rounding numbers with more than 2 decimal places
  • Money and financial planning

Students will also complete a Daily Review 4 times a week to revise concepts we have already covered this year or front-load them for concepts we still need to cover.

Knowledge Rich

At the beginning of Term 4, we will learn about money and running a business through the Knowledge Rich unit called Understanding Economics. We will look at what an economy is, delving into needs versus wants and sellers versus consumers.

This knowledge will assist the Grade 5s with preparing for and running a stall on Market Day. More information about this event will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Bike Education

Later in the term, students will participate in a bike education program. Schools teach this program to equip students with the vital life skills of safe cycling and responsible road use, fostering independence, fitness, and promoting active transportation. The program covers road rules, safe riding behaviours, and bike handling skills in a controlled environment, preparing students to navigate shared roads safely as both cyclists and pedestrians. The dates for this program can be found at the top of this page in the Upcoming Dates section.

More information regarding this program will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Green Team News

The Green Team has raised over $80 thanks to students putting their juice, milk and water containers into the 10 cent collection tubs, instead of landfill bins. That's a lot of money but more importantly that's a lot of rubbish kept out of landfill.
