Learning in Action

📖 Literacy

Preview: This term, students will be reading the novel Hatchet and will be exploring new vocabulary as they progress through the story. In sentence-level writing, they will focus on using apostrophes correctly, understanding and applying direct and indirect speech, and practising how to summarise sentences effectively. Students will also study the picture story book Flood, where they will learn about floods while consolidating their knowledge of narrative structures. To conclude the unit, students will bring together everything they have learned this year to create a buddy book—a picture story book all about starting school—to share with their 2026 buddies.

➗ Maths

Preview: In Maths this term, students will have a strong focus on fractions and decimals in their number unit. When exploring fractions, they will work on identifying equivalent fractions, ordering fractions, using fraction bars, and converting and ordering mixed and improper fractions, before moving on to converting fractions to decimals. The decimals unit will involve representing and writing decimals, placing decimals on a number line, renaming and partitioning decimals, and will conclude with applying decimals in money contexts.

In addition to the number unit, students will complete two applied maths units. The first will focus on mass and capacity, where they will measure in grams and kilograms, as well as millilitres and litres, and practise comparing and ordering mass. To finish the year, students will explore angles—learning to name, estimate, and compare different angles.

🧠 Knowledge-Rich Units

Preview: In our Knowledge Rich unit this term, students will dive into the fascinating world of the Vikings. They will explore world geography to understand where the Vikings travelled and settled, before learning about Viking runes, daily life, and what it meant “to go a-Viking.” Students will study the Vikings as sailors, traders, and raiders, investigate Viking ships—including the famous longship—and learn about influential figures such as Eric the Red and Leif Eriksson and their voyages west. They will also become storytellers themselves as they explore Viking gods, myths, and how Viking culture still influences us today, including the days of the week.

Camp ADANAC Recap

Wow! What a fantastic time all the students and teachers had at Camp Adanac this week! I’m sure your children have already shared about their favourite experiences but here is an overview of our days at camp, as well as some wonderful photos:

Monday

Students were extremely excited to arrive for their first school camp and were, of course, eager to see their rooms and find out who their cabin buddies were. Everyone was happy to be with their friends and to get their rooms all set up.

It was then straight into a range of activities outside. Students completed four activities from flying fox, camp cooking, low ropes/beach volleyball, canoeing, aqua ponding, disc golf and a photo hunt. During afternoon tea the students were treated to some birthday cake to celebrate Reggie’s birthday.

After some free time, students enjoyed a yummy dinner of chicken parmigiana with vegetables, followed by a night activity. We went for a short walk and cooked marshmallows around the campfire, before all the exhausted students and teachers went to bed.

Tuesday

Students woke up ready for another day of fun activities. Breakfast was served and followed by a highlight of the trip, the lip sync battle. It was great to see some of our very brave and enthusiastic students (and staff!) perform. When the activities began students braved the cold water to zoom down the 110 metre water slide, showed off their singing skills at karaoke, and tested their aim in archery. They worked together as a team when hut building and tackling team initiatives, while pickleball added a fast-paced and energetic challenge. Once again we ate some delicious food for the day; jam donuts for morning tea, a sausage sizzle for lunch, smartie cookies for afternoon tea and pasta for dinner, followed by tasty chocolate mousse with sprinkles. For our night activity we bunkered down for a movie night which was enjoyed with some delicious popcorn.

Wednesday

For our last day of camp, students completed their final three activities from Monday’s rotations. They enjoyed yummy cinnamon scrolls for morning tea, and enjoyed creating their own rolls for lunch. Before we knew it, it was time to get on the bus to head back to school!
