Looking Back
Before we jump into our last term in Grade 2, we wanted to say a huge thank you for a fantastic Term 3! Here's a snapshot of our fun sports day, where we had a parade with the Grade 4's and 5's:
Looking Forward
đ Literacy
This term we are doing things a little differently, integrating vocab, sentence level and text level writing into our literature units. We will be doing this through different mentor texts, themes, and writing genres.
Â
Imaginative TextsÂ
- âThe Stone Lion,â by Margeret Wild & Ritva Voutila
âThe Snail and the Whale,â by Julia Donaldson
Â
Imaginative and Persuasive
- âTiddler,â by Julia Donaldson
- âThe True Story of the Three Little Pigs,â by John Scieszka
Word Work
Over the term, the Grade 2âs will learn a range of spelling rules, practising both reading and writing before moving into suffixes and prefixes.
Some concepts we will cover:
- Silent Final e
- ar vs a
- plurals/third person
- schwa
â Maths
Over the term, we are excited to engage in the following topics:
Fractions - looking at halves, quarters and eighths of collections, lengths and shapes. We will also be finding equivalent fractions, and comparing fractions of both time and capacity.
Place value - practising representing, regrouping, reading, writing, comparing and ordering with 4 digit numbers, before moving on to rounding to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000.
Shape - looking at polygons and their features before practising creating and manipulating them by splitting and combining shapes. We will then move onto 3D shapes, looking at their features and comparing them to 2D shapes.
Operations - revising addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
đ§ Knowledge-Rich Units
This term we will be completing one Knowledge Rich unit, on âAncient China.â Throughout the unit we will focus on the following big questions:
Â
- How did two rivers in China help an ancient civilization develop?
- How were ancestors honoured in ancient China?
- How did Confucius think people should treat one another?
- Why might learning to write Chinese words be more difficult than learning to write English words?
- What are some Chinese inventions and which inventions are most useful?
- Why was silk making such a closely guarded secret?
Term 4 Extras!
Grade 2 Sport: On Monday afternoon, we are getting together for a bit of fun. We are using this time to really hone our teamwork skills, ensuring we show good sportsmanship and follow the rules respectfully.
Tech Time: With NAPLAN early next year, this term we will be taking time to practise logging in and navigating the chromebooks.
