5/6 Classroom News

5/6 News
Wishing all the wonderful father figures in our community a very happy day this Sunday! We hope you enjoy reading the fun and light-hearted “Day in the Life of Dad” writing pieces your child has created for you.
With spring upon us, it’s time to dust off those school hats and have them ready for Term 4. UV levels have already started to rise, so you may wish to send your child with their hat now. Sunscreen is also available in both 5/6 classrooms for students who need it. They will be reminded but students will need to independently do this.
House Athletics
On Wednesday, we witnessed a fantastic display of sportsmanship from our Grade 5/6's at our House Athletics. Teachers were especially proud of the encouragement and support shown by students, with many helping others to finish races when they thought they couldn’t. This was a wonderful testament to the caring and inclusive spirit of our school community.
Inform and Empower - Cybersafety
Our Grade 5/6 students have been learning about Cybersafety as a part of Thrive Online, Inform and Empower.
Here’s what we covered:
- There will be times online we feel uncomfortable. This could be because of something we’ve seen or something that’s being said to us.
- We have options to help us navigate uncomfortable situations online. Seek Help Record/Screenshot Report Block/Change settings/Take a Break
- One way of being kind and brave online is by being an upstander. This might be sending a supportive message to someone, calling out hurtful actions directly or telling a trusted adult.
- Consent, in the context of digital interactions, means asking for and receiving permission from someone before sharing their private photos or personal information online.
Some conversation starters for home:
- Can you think of a time when you, or someone you know, felt uncomfortable online?
- Have you ever been on the Kids Helpline website? Let’s check it out together.
- Have you ever had to block or report another user? What happened?
- Have you ever seen other people act as an upstander online? What did they do?
- Why do you think it’s important to get consent before sharing a somebody’s photo or video?
Hands on Learning
With the start of the day being really nice with the warm sun shining, Brett's Hands on Learning group headed down to the undercover basketball court. We were working really hard but also have fun while working. We had to drill screws into the ground to help guide us to know where to paint the lines by connecting string lines to mark out the mini bat tennis courts. We had to make calculations using Billy’s maths book then we went to work. At first it did not really make sense. Our calculations were good but it was challenging to paint the lines in the right spot. Then I helped out Jade painting a turtle with some green paint. It was weird because I had to mix some black in with the green. Lucas and Billy making us honey soy kebabs for lunch. It was a challenging but great day. Thank you Brett for you patience, guidance and wit. You always make it fun.
