Grade 3 Inquiry Kick-Off Day: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

On Monday the 13th of October, the Grade 3 students took part in a special Kick-Off Day filled with hands-on learning and fun activities to help launch our new Inquiry unit on ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’,

We began the day with a recycling-themed Year 3 sport session, where students worked together in teams to complete creative games that highlighted the importance of reusing materials and working sustainably.

Next, we explored the world of gardening and sustainability by making our very own Hairy Harrys and Harriets — grass-headed friends made from recycled materials. Students loved designing and decorating their creations, and they can’t wait to watch their grassy “hair” grow over the coming weeks!

In the afternoon, the Grade 3s rolled up their sleeves for a yard clean-up challenge, collecting items that could be repurposed. Using these materials, students showed their creativity by constructing unique recycled art sculptures, turning everyday waste into imaginative works of art.

It was a fantastic start to our Inquiry unit, and students are already inspired to think about how they can make a difference in caring for our environment.

Exploring Division in Year 3

Over the past few weeks, the Year 3 classes have been diving into the world of division and exploring how it connects to multiplication. Students have been representing division in a variety of ways — using equal groups, arrays, and number sentences — to help build a deep understanding of what it means to divide and share equally. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and problem-solving challenges, students have discovered that division isn’t just about “sharing” but also about “grouping” and “repeated subtraction.”

As their confidence has grown, students have begun to make important connections between multiplication and division, noticing that the two operations are closely linked. They have used their knowledge of multiplication facts to solve division problems efficiently and have enjoyed using materials such as counters, blocks, and digital tools to represent their thinking in different ways.

It has been wonderful to see students working collaboratively, explaining their strategies to classmates, and celebrating those “aha!” moments when they see how multiplication and division fit together. The Year 3 teachers are proud of the enthusiasm and persistence students have shown as they continue developing their mathematical understanding and reasoning skills.
