Road Safety

Road Safety

Road Safety is one of the key focus areas of the PDHPE Curriculum. At St Michael’s we are committed to working with families to help keep our children safe on the roads and educate them to be responsible road users in the future. Throughout the year we will be providing valuable information to families and sending home information from transport NSW.

Data indicates that following School Holidays there is an increase in the number of Road Safety Accidents involving children. Please discuss and reinforce road safety practices with your child to help keep them safe during the holidays and school time.

Helping Your Child Around Buses

It is very important to be aware of bus safety especially around hometime. Children are easily distracted and are still developing their judgement of the speed of oncoming traffic and their peripheral hearing.

If you are running late to pick your child up at the end of the school day, please phone the school office and we will keep them safe until you arrive. Children should never cross the road between buses. Each student will take home a Helping Your Child Around Buses pamphlet.

Safety Town

Safety Town is a road safety education resource for teachers, students and families. It provides a variety of interactive learning activities for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. There is a section for families with lots of important information to help keep your child safe. As we work together we encourage all families to take time to explore and talk with children about Safety Town activities www.safetytown.com.au

School student travel information for parents and students

School Travel Passes

Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

Terms of Use

Students using School Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use .

This includes travel within the approved times between 6.30am and 7.00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their Child/Youth Opal card for any travel outside these times.

All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.
