Science

It has been a busy and interesting term so far in Science focusing on our topic, Biology: Exploring Plants and Animals.
Students across all year levels have investigated the differences between living and non-living things, compared plants and animals, investigated life cycles, identified plant and animal features and adaptations and, just this week, explored grouping and classification of animals based on similar traits. Our junior students focused on the five vertebrate groups including mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians whilst our mid to senior students explored these within the context of the entire animal kingdom using a dichotomous key, highlighting vertebrate and invertebrate animals. Our Grade 3/4's focused on key features of each animal group, whilst our Grade 5/6's used a key to classify different animals.
We enjoyed making our own grass heads earlier in the term and it has been exciting this week to notice some growth. Today we recorded some of our observations. Each class is also growing a bean plant. Recently we noticed some of the bean seeds sprouting – very exciting! Looking forward to more observations over the remainder of the term.
To conclude our topic, we will be exploring the needs and interdependence of living things, completing a review of our key learning this term and spending time researching our projects. Some students have recently chosen their topic and have already commenced research! Looking forward to observing the research process and the final projects early next term!
National Science Week - well done to all of our students for your enthusiasm and engagement in our science week activities recently. It was wonderful to observe your great curiosity!
*This tree can be seen in our school foyer. Students each shaded a leaf as part of our science week rotation activities, contributing to our school tree. "Like the leaves on a tree, we work together to achieve amazing things and create something beautiful!"
