Year 3/4

The Year 3 and 4 students enjoyed an immersive and educational excursion to Kryal Castle, bringing history to life through hands-on activities. One of the highlights of the day was a reenactment of the Battle of Hastings. Taking the role of either the Normans or Saxons, the students took on different roles, gaining a deeper understanding of historical battles and medieval life through active participation. This experience allowed them to see how such events shaped the past in an engaging way.

Beyond the battlefield, the students explored other facets of medieval culture and craftsmanship. They had the opportunity to create their own leatherwork, learning traditional skills and taking home a unique, handmade souvenir. This activity provided insight into the daily lives of medieval artisans and the importance of skilled crafts in that era.

The students also delved into the world of medieval armour, learning how different types of armour were constructed and used in battle. Handling and observing armour gave them a new appreciation for the challenges and demands faced by knights. To round out their experience, they practiced writing with quill and ink, a challenging yet rewarding task that highlighted the importance of writing in history and the effort it once took to record information.

We hope this allowed students to learn through doing, making history feel real and memorable.
