Year 9 STEM
This term the Yr 9 STEM classes are learning about the amazing brain including parts and functions and are investigating how brain training might improve memory skills. In groups, they created models of neurons with accuracy and detail showing off their ability to represent these fundamental building blocks of the brain and nervous system that are too small and complex to observe directly.
Year 9 Drama
Last Wednesday, Year 9 Drama had a wonderful workshop with Clint from Homunculus Theatre on how to act in the style of Commedia D’ell Arte. The Italian Renaissance comedy style is renowned for its’ impact on the Shakespearean comedies and is still utilised in contemporary comedy product with the appearance of its’ stock characters, scenarios and lazzi (gags). The students worked with the stock characters and their masks to develop their ability to perform, using voice and movement, in the style of character to make us all laugh. It was a fun filled workshop, giving students the skills to create the characters they will need in their upcoming Commedia assessment.
Peer Power
A group of Year 10 students participated in a Capacity Building Leadership Day, hosted by Peer Power. These students were identified during the Year 10 Camp at Emu Gully earlier this term as possessing qualities that make them valuable potential leaders. The Peer Power session aimed to develop their strengths and enhance their natural leadership traits, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, empathy, and their ability to inspire and support others.
The students fully embraced the experience, leaving both myself and the staff at Peer Power inspired and excited about their leadership potential.

Year 11 Biology
Year 11 Biology classes visited Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre in Week 4 to immerse themselves in their Ecology Unit. This Unit highlights the importance of understanding the natural environment in order to protect it. Students learned skills in observing and identifying wader birds, running transects through mangroves to collecting data on biotic and abiotic factors, and collecting plankton samples to observe under the microscope. They will apply their new suite of skills to modify one of these survey techniques and conduct their own student experiment when we return to Nudgee Beach next year.
