Japanese

Foundation students have consolidated the topics that they have covered so far this year (Greetings, Numbers, Colours, Body parts and Shapes). The Japanese vocabulary that Foundation students now can say and recognise in such a short time is amazing. Students also simulated making Onigiri (rice balls) with recycled paper as the rice and black paper for the seaweed wrapping (see picture). They will cook real Onigiri in Week 6 as a part of the Onigiri Action program run to supply food for those in need on World Food Day onigiri-action.com

Year 1 and 2 students have been learning classroom instructions through a song. The song includes phrases like stand up, sit down, look at the teacher, listen, fold (origami), be quiet, open the door, close the door, write, read and raise your hand, please. The students have begun to understand these instructions in general class situations. Even though some phrases are long, they are now connecting the context with the Japanese meaning. Well done, everyone!

Year 3 and 4 students started learning about the Japanese term 'Mottainai, which means 'too good to waste'. This phrase is deeply connected to Japanese culture and values, encouraging people to appreciate and make the most of what they have, while also being mindful of the environment and avoiding unnecessary waste. We also discussed why it's so important and realised how lucky we are to be able to eat every day while many children in poor countries don't have enough food to grow up. It was good to hear some meaningful discussions amongst the students.
