Dear Families,

I hope this message finds you well. As we continue our commitment to supporting every student’s growth, I want to share the exciting initiatives we've continued to strengthen and introduce in literacy and numeracy throughout this year.

In literacy, we are implementing a synthetic phonics approach in line with the Department of Education’s new Victorian Teaching and Learning model. This evidence-based method focuses on explicitly teaching letter sounds and blending techniques, empowering students to decode words confidently and improve their reading fluency. Synthetic phonics is designed to meet each learner where they are, allowing for tailored, step-by-step progress in reading skills. You may notice your child practicing specific letter sounds, word-building activities, and blending techniques as part of this approach. These strategies are proven to strengthen foundational literacy, and we’re excited to see the progress our students will make!

In numeracy, we have been enhancing our lessons with the LESR lesson structure (Launch, Explore, Summarize, Reflect). This framework is designed to make math learning more interactive and engaging. Here’s how it works:

  1. Launch: We start with a brief, accessible introduction to the day's lesson, ensuring all students are prepared.
  2. Explore: Students work on tasks that encourage problem-solving and collaboration.
  3. Summarize: Together, we review concepts and solutions to reinforce learning.
  4. Reflect: Finally, students take a moment to consider what they’ve learned and how it applies.

This structure will support our students in building critical thinking skills, deepening their understanding of math concepts, and becoming more confident in numeracy.

We appreciate your partnership in fostering a love for learning, and we encourage you to ask your child about their experience with these new approaches. As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or feedback.

Warm regards,

Teresa Stone
