Mimi McGuire and Jessie-Rose Talbot-Cooke, Year 10 SRC Representatives

Over the course of Semester 2 this year, Year 10 has been working with Community 4 Compassion to enrich our Service Learning. Working with this organisation has taught us the impact of giving back. This non-profit organisation provides meals and social support for those in need, preparing over 800 meals weekly with help from schools, volunteers, and donations.

Their mission is to support the less fortunate community through nutritious meals and friendly social interactions, creating a welcoming environment with the help of local schools, volunteers, and donations.

Service Learning connects what we study in school with real-world action, allowing us to gain skills and insights while making a positive impact. Our Year 10 cohort has played a role by dedicating time to tasks like meal preparation, serving, and socialising with visitors. Each week brought new experiences; some of us prepared serviettes and cutlery, while others served meals and spent time with the guests. Listening to people’s stories and sharing our own, we saw first-hand the value of kindness and respect.

One highlight was sitting with visitors during meals, learning about their lives and seeing how a small act of service can make a difference. This opportunity has taught us to approach others with greater empathy and understanding, it has reminded us of the importance of community support and also taught us all the profound impact of helping others. We are so grateful to have been part of this giving back to the community project.
